THIS WEEK's PROGRAM
Leonard Garfield is Executive Director of Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry, a nationally-accredited regional history center with a collection of 4 million historic artifacts, changing exhibits and educational programs related to the history of Seattle, the Pacific Northwest and the nation. MOHAI was recently designated an official affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Garfield is leading the museum in its move to a new home at the historic Naval Reserve Armory at Lake Union Park scheduled to open in Fall 2012.
Before joining MOHAI, Garfield served as director of the King County Office of Cultural Resources (now 4Culture) from 1993-1999, managing the programs of the King County Arts Commission and the King County Landmarks & Heritage Commission. From 1985-1993, Garfield served as a coordinator of Washington State’s historic preservation program, where he administered the National Register of Historic Places Program in Washington.
He previously worked for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin from 1978 to 1985, where he served as the state preservation historian. Garfield has taught historic preservation in the College of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Washington.
Among other writings, he is co-author of Built in Washington, an architectural history of the state published by WSU Press.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2010: From Laura Hillenbrand, the bestselling author of Seabiscuit, comes Unbroken, the inspiring true story of a man who lived through a series of catastrophes almost too incredible to be believed. In evocative, immediate descriptions, Hillenbrand unfurls the story of Louie Zamperini — a juvenile delinquent-turned-Olympic runner-turned-Army hero. During a routine search mission over the Pacific, Louie’s plane crashed into the ocean, and what happened to him over the next three years of his life is a story that will keep you glued to the pages, eagerly awaiting the next turn in the story and fearing it at the same time. You’ll cheer for the man who somehow maintained his selfhood and humanity despite the monumental degradations he suffered, and you’ll want to share this book with everyone you know. — Juliet Disparte
