THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Gilead Sciences, Inc.
"Life Sciences: Hype or Jobs"
Dr. Bruce Montgomery currently works as Senior Vice President, Respiratory Therapeutics at Gilead Sciences, Inc. Before his work with Gilead, Dr. Montgomery was the Founder and CEO of Corus Pharma of Seattle, a drug development company focusing on infectious disease and respiratory drugs. Corus Pharma was purchased by Gilead Sciences, Inc., in August of 2006. Until October 2000, Dr. Montgomery served as Executive Vice President of Research and Development at PathoGenesis Corporation.

Dr. Montgomery has extensive pharmaceutical company experience in drug development, operations and financing. He has been responsible for two complete drug approvals, started multiple other programs that have led to three additional FDA approvals. From 1985 to 1989, Dr. Montgomery was co-inventor, and then led the effort to obtain FDA approval of aerosolized pentamidine, the second AIDS drug approved by the FDA.

In 1998, the Commissioner of the FDA recognized Dr. Montgomery with special citation for his industry leading acceleration in the development and approval of tobramycin solution for inhalation.

SOS Children's Villages Project
Brian Rayfield
In early 2007, I became acquainted with an orphanage called the SOS Children's Village of Sindh in Karachi, Pakistan, through one of it's founders, Mr. Yacoob Zamindar. There is perhaps nowhere in Asia in greater need of our development and support than Pakistan, right now, and due to the recent dislocations from Afghanistan and the earthquakes a few years ago, this orphanage was pushed well beyond it's capacity.

The SOS Children's Villages provide support for children from infancy to young adulthood and ensure that their children are not only well nurtured, but that they leave the facility with job skills and self sufficiency in the world. Mr. Zamindar, who is also a Rotarian (A past president of the Rotary Club of Karachi South) provided us with a wish list for the facility.

With the help of Peter Kalunian, Rob Rose, and many other Rotarians in Bellevue and Karachi, we were awarded a matching grant for a new water system, equipment for an outdoor sports facility, and a new computer lab in the fall of 2008. The water system was completed almost immediately, due to the generosity of the host club. The computer lab was completed a few months later, and due to political turmoil and military actions in the region, the sports facilities were just completed this past month.

I am very grateful to have been a part of this project. It was a powerful example of the global reach of Rotary and its effectiveness in making a positive impact on peoples' lives in the farthest reaches of the world.

Rotary District 5030 Conference, May 14-16
Leslie Lloyd
Calling all Bellevue Rotarians! Don't miss the most-overlooked fun time in Rotary!

Registrations are underway for the 2010 District 5020 Annual Conference. This annual get-together is one of the most valuable ways to engage in Rotary. The District Conference offers excellent fellowship opportunities and a glimpse of the great work of other clubs in our area. Located in Portland, OR, this year's conference offers excellent speakers, lovely accommodations, and a great walkable city to enjoy, during the best time of the year to enjoy it.

Keynoters this year include Marvin Hamlisch, Grammy and Tony award winning composer, and Deepa Willinham, a California Rotarian with an inspiring story of saving children. As she puts it, "Rotarians' actions are a perfect example of how the power of one can work, changing the life of one child, one community, one village at a time."

Sidebar activities include: motorcycle ride to Portland, pub crawl, Powell's Book Store tour, a visit to the Japanese Arboretum, and much more.

Don't miss this chance to learn more about Rotary and enjoy the fellowship of some really great people. This is a must-do for any new Rotarians. And, all you "seasoned" Rotarians? You will enjoy it, too. Promise!

Registering is easy just go to:  www.rotary5030conference2010.org/
Or, if you’d prefer to make plans by phone, contact at Neale Weaver at 206-954-2560.
