Mrs. DeLaine Emmert, UW's First Lady
“Living the Life of a University President’s Wife”
DeLaine S. Emmert, the wife of University of Washington president Mark Emmert, is a committed educator and community leader. A public school teacher for over 15 years, DeLaine taught at both the elementary and middle school levels and in both special education and traditional classroom settings. She was awarded extramural funding for science and mathematics curriculum development from the Chevron Foundation, and also received an Eisenhower Grant from the U. S. Department of Education for collaborative work with the faculty at Montana State University while teaching at the Wilson Science and Technology School.
DeLaine is also an active community leader, devoting time to projects ranging from the environment and animal welfare to disease prevention and the arts. Through her involvement in the university communities where she and her family have lived, DeLaine has had the opportunity to take on a wide variety of challenges, including chairing the fundraising campaign to build Mike, LSU's Bengal Tiger mascot, a new habitat and serving on the Governor's Keep Louisiana Clean Board. Currently, she is a member of the Board of Directors for the Woodland Park Zoo, and next spring she will join the Executive Committee for the Association of American Universities Partners program. DeLaine formerly served as Newcomers Chair for the Council of Presidents' and Chancellors' Spouses of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
DeLaine holds two bachelor's degrees in education from the University of Northern Colorado and has conducted graduate study at a number of universities. She and Mark have two children, Stephen and Jennifer.
There will be more Bellevue College student teams than anticipated participating in this year's Multicultural Consulting class, so we are in the market for a few Rotarians who are interested in acting as a Mentor to one of these teams. Mentors contribute a "real world" frame of reference to a team, as it provides consulting services to one of six local entities.
This process starts with a kick-off meeting on January 14th and culminates with final verbal presentations on March 16th. If you are interested, please contact Jim Hogue (Ph 425-455-387).

Annual Crystal Mountain Ski Fellowship
Scott East
Ace Host and Ski Guide Witherspoon Dickey has confirmed his availability for hosting our annual Crystal Mountain Ski Fellowship on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 2 and 3.
"Ski" is short reference to all snow rides and glides, so bring your boards of choice. This is a perennially popular event, where members get to know each other in a much less formal setting than most our other gatherings.
We try to arrive at the ski lodge (near Crystal Mountain base) late afternoon on Tuesday, in time for the pre-dinner social session (extraordinaire), morph to the dinner, then on to the games of chance and others, before drifting off to the respective guy/gal dorms of the lodge.
Then, we are up for a hearty breakfast Wednesday and off to the slopes. Non-skiers hang out at the lodge before heading home or group up with the slope side bunch for lunch at 1:00 PM. Some head home after lunch, but many ski to end of day.
Regardless whether you know for sure you can attend, at least block the time. I will follow up with more details as we get closer to the date. Contact me for more information in the interim or if you want to carpool for a practice day or two.
Please note: this is a member only event. For an excellent winter fellowship warm-up that includes spouses/partners, sign up for the BRC Sun Valley 2010 ski trip, again set for February 4-7. Contact chairs Rondi Bennett and Larry Mast for more details on that event.
