Raymond Gastil
Planning Director, City of Seattle
"Seattle and Bellevue"
Ray Gastil is Planning Director for the City of Seattle, where he is responsible for programs ranging from neighborhood planning to district plans to updating Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan. Previously, he was Director of the Manhattan Office of the NYC Department of City Planning. In that role, he served on the planning leadership team for the West Chelsea/Highline plan and rezoning, the 125th Street Corridor plan and rezoning, the Western Rail Yards guidelines, and the Manhattanville in West Harlem plan and rezoning associated with Columbia University’s campus plan. Several of these projects included regulatory approaches to incentivizing affordable housing, arts, and active retail uses.
Before his tenure at the Manhattan Office, Gastil was the founding director of Van Alen Institute: Projects in Public Architecture, where he worked closely with state and city governments, community groups, and universities as well as international organizations to raise the role of planning and design in regenerating cities, focusing on New York while actively engaged in a national and international dialogue. Among the projects he led was a design competition for the new TKTS Booth and park in the middle of Times Square, widely hailed as a new urban icon. Earlier, Gastil was Director of the Regional Design Program for the Regional Plan Association, where his work focused on designing for growth in rail-served communities in the tri-state metropolitan area of New York-New Jersey-Connecticut.
Gastil has served on numerous boards, juries, and professional organizations; and has taught graduate design studios and seminars at the University of Pennsylvania and Pratt Institute. He is author of articles, essays, and catalogues on planning, urban design, and architecture, including Beyond the Edge: New York’s New Waterfront.
Commenting on his position in Seattle, Gastil has noted that the city has “a diversity of landscapes, cityscapes, and neighborhoods that make it an inspiring place to live and work.” He adds that he has worked to “contribute to and expand Seattle’s initiatives to shape change that integrates the mutual goals of urban design excellence and sustainability.” While most of Gastil’s professional experience and training was on the East Coast, he grew up on the East Side and Seattle.
SIGN UP ONLINE for Salvation Army Bell Ringing, December 5 and 6, one-hour shifts from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, outside Nordstrom. Contact Liz Swanson (Ph 425.761.6721) if you have questions.
Bellevue Rotary In the News
Leslie Lloyd
Vice President Leslie Lloyd and Public Relations Co-Chair Patti Skelton-McCougan are hosting Craig Groshart, Editor of the Bellevue Reporter, at next week’s meeting. We want to make sure the reporter is aware of the good works of the Bellevue Rotary Club, both here at home, as well as abroad.
We are asking you for story ideas, such as our selection of Eastside Baby Corner as our 2010 Auction Beneficiary, to share with Mr. Groshart. Please email your ideas to Leslie Lloyd, and we will be sure to bring Mr. Groshart’s awareness of our activities to a new high level!
Orders are due by September 30. Pears will be available for pick-up at Rotary First Harvest, 3200 1st Ave S, Seattle, on October 7 and 8, from 10:30AM‑1:30PM. Please contact Jacki Lorenz at Rotary First Harvest (Ph 206‑236‑0357). |

Do you know of any non-Rotarian young professionals who’d be great for GSE in early 2010?
District 5030 is looking for 4-5 young professionals (ages 25-40) currently not in Rotary who are interested in developing professional and leadership skills during a month-long Group Study Exchange to Bolivia. Anticipated dates are April 11-May 9, 2010. All costs are covered by Rotary. If you know of someone who would benefit from such an exchange have them check out gse.rotary5030.org. Applications are due October 12, 2009, and can be found at this website.
Keep looking for the cowbell on your table (there are 5 of them) to bump others' fines, and remember to bring your ticket stubs from arts attendance — museums, theatres, music, etc. — as putting one in the basket is allowed in lieu of a fine. Click here to let your Sergeant at Arms know of a fellow Rotarian’s fineable antics.
Calling All Bellevue Rotary Photogs!
Leslie Lloyd
We’re taking extra effort to document our activities for the coming year – and for posterity!
Please submit your photos from fellowship or service activities, such as Camp Goodtimes, President’s Celebration, Rotary First Harvest, Fireside, golf outings – any and all events of the Bellevue Rotary Club. We will use them for the District Assembly in Portland next year, and they will also be preserved for all time by our resident historian, Stu Vander Hoek.
It’s simple: all you have to do is email your digital images to:
Be sure to include the names of all the people in each photo.
If you’d prefer, you can copy your photos to a CD or thumb drive and give them to Leslie Lloyd at a Rotary meeting.
With your help, the BRC will have a rich display of club activities for next year’s conference – and for all time.
