THIS WEEK's PROGRAM

Lorenzo Romar
UW Men's Basketball Coach
"Update on the Huskies Basketball Program!"

Loreenzo RomarIn seven years, Coach Lorenzo Romar has elevated Washington to the elite level of college basketball. The charismatic coach plans to stay at the top after leading the 2008-09 Huskies to their first outright Pac-10 Championship since 1953.

Romar's Huskies were 26-9 in 2009 and 14-4 in the Pac-10 Conference to finish a game ahead of UCLA. He earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors for his efforts.

Washington earned its first-ever No. 4 seed for the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

Romar begins his eighth season at Washington in 2009-10 and has a slew of stellar incoming recruits and a strong core of returning players. Despite losing All-Pac-10 member Jon Brockman, Romar's 2009-10 squad should push for another Pac-10 title.

Romar has 135 wins since 2004, the most wins over a six-year span in school history.

A native of Compton, California, Romar graduated from Pius X High School. He earned his associate degree from Cerritos (California) Community College in 1978, before studying at UW from 1978-80. He completed his coursework at Cincinnati, receiving his bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 1992.

Romar transferred to Washington in 1978 and played two seasons for legendary Husky head coach Marv Harshman. Romar was a two-year starter for the Huskies on the 1978-79 and 1979-80 teams.

Romar served as team captain his senior year and was the recipient of the Most Inspirational Award both years, an honor voted on by his teammates.

At Washington, Romar replaced Bob Bender, who resigned on March 13, 2002. Romar is the second former Husky player to return as the head coach. He joins Lynn Nance, who played at UW from 1964-65 and was the Huskies' head coach for four seasons from 1989-93.

Romar and his wife Leona have three daughters, Terra, Tavia and Taylor.

Calling All Bellevue Rotary Photogs!
Leslie Lloyd

We’re taking extra effort to document our activities for the coming year – and for posterity!

Please submit your photos from fellowship or service activities, such as Camp Goodtimes, President’s Celebration, Rotary First Harvest, Fireside, golf outings – any and all events of the Bellevue Rotary Club. We will use them for the District Assembly in Portland next year, and they will also be preserved for all time by our resident historian, Stu Vander Hoek.

It’s simple: all you have to do is email your digital images to:

photos@bellevuerotary.net

Be sure to include the names of all the people in each photo.

If you’d prefer, you can copy your photos to a CD or thumb drive and give them to Leslie Lloyd at a Rotary meeting.

With your help, the BRC will have a rich display of club activities for next year’s conference – and for all time.

More cowbell for Rotary!More Cowbell for Rotary!

This year’s Sergeant at Arms is taking a cue from one of the most popular Saturday Night Live skits of all time: Christopher Walken and Will Farrell, respectively, demanding and delivering “More cowbell!” So, when you see a fellow club member’s name in a publication or doing something that’s worthy of note, think “That’s worth ‘more cowbell' for Rotary!” and inform the Sergeant at Arms.

Letter of Thanks for Bhutan Project Donation
Humberto Acevedo

A thank-you letter was received recently from the Buthan Burn Care Center president in regard to our clubs contributions. Mrs. Elliot will also be sending a printed report and pictures soon.

Dear Seattle Rotarians:

Thank you so very much for your generous donation on behalf of Seattle Rotary #4 to Global Burn Care and Reconstructive Institute (GBCRI) for Bhutan Project, for the purchase of an electric dermatome instrument.
With this new surgical instrument, which is not available in Bhutan, burn victims can be treated to harvest skin for grafting burn wounds. This is an essential part of the burn treatment procedure and also reduces infection and debilitating burn contractures.

A new burn unit in Bhutan is being established in conjunction with the construction of a new hospital. When completed, we hope by fall 2009, we plan to begin on-site services and training with our team of expert doctors from our valued partner, Harborview Burn Center (University of Washington).

Your generous financial support, which makes acquisition of this instrument possible, is very much appreciated and will provide long-lasting benefit to the citizens of Bhutan.

Sincerely,
Margrit Elliot, RN
President and Founder

Wicked, October 1, ParamountBack by “Popular” Demand. The New York Times calls WICKED “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster,” and when it first played in Seattle in 2006, it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Since its Broadway debut five years ago, it has won 20 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED “is a phenomenon that keeps growing” (LA Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for “the most complete and completely satisfying new musical in a long time.” (USA Today)
