Bellevue Rotary Scholarship Recipents
Jill Ostrem

On Tuesday, June 9, we recognized nine students as Bellevue Rotary scholarship receipients, awarding $10,000 in scholarships across the group.

The students participated in the process by writing essays and completing an application, demonstrating to us their academic excellence, plans for the future, summary of financial need and most importantly, their commitment to this community through service.

Truly, these students have already demonstrated a commitment to service above self — examples of their contributions include service with the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club, scouting, Mountains to Sound Greenway, Children’s Hospital, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Earthbound, and international projects, including Computers for Uganda and a microlending project in  the Dominican Republic.

These students will be pursuing a variety of studies and careers, including nursing, medicine, anthropology, business, architecture, and filmmaking.

Scholarships were awarded to:

Bellevue High School students:

International School students:

Forest Ridge student:

Congratulations to these students!

Fellowship Opportunity: Wicked!

Join us at the Paramount Theater on October 1, at 7:30 PM, for "Wicked." We have excellent seats in the Loge, section A, rows A, B & C. Event price is $164 per person, which includes the pre-function.

Please contact Lynn Jones as soon as possible if you are interested in purchasing tickets.

Wicked, October 1, ParamountBack by “Popular” Demand. The New York Times calls WICKED “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster,” and when it first played in Seattle in 2006, it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Since its Broadway debut five years ago, it has won 20 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, WICKED “is a phenomenon that keeps growing” (LA Times). Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for “the most complete and completely satisfying new musical in a long time.” (USA Today)

Fine-Free Forbes FactFine-Free Forbes Fact

Too few are the exemptions from pesky Sergeant Fines. Alas, here is one any Bellevue Rotarian can take advantage of, but it requires some sleuthing: find out a fact about our Administrative Assistant, Lisa Forbes, share it with Sergeant At Arms Dale King, as well as bulletin@bellevuerotary.net, and be fine-free for the day the fact appears in the bulletin!

Camp Goodtimes Offers Two Sessions — Need Volunteers!

SAVE THE DATE!
It is almost summer, when we can think about going to camp, and the wonderful, wild Rotary Camp Goodtimes Carnival will be held Thursday, July 2. Plan to spend the day on Vashon Island helping kids with cancer have a great day.  The kids tell us the Rotary carnival is the highlight of their summer.  It might be yours, too.  Don't miss it! Contact
Charlotte Ellis for more information.

Camp Goodtimes is now offering 2 sessions: June 28-July 4 and July 26-August 1. We expect over 200 children with cancer to come to camp this year. For this to happen, we need 140 volunteers and have been working very hard to find applicants. If you have kids over 18, friends, or employees who might be available either week, ask them to go to www.campgoodtimeswest.org to apply on line.

In addition to cabin counselors, we need program staff and support staff. The camp is on nearby Vashon Island, the cabins are modern, the beach is wonderful, and everyone who comes has a great week. Contact Charlotte Ellis for more information.
