M. Todd Dean, President
NW Region of the Keiretsu Forum
"Angel Investing in Turbulent Times"
Growing up in the Big Sky State of Montana, Todd learned first hand the value of relationships, hard work and community. After moving to the Pacific Northwest nearly 20 years ago, he has combined his talent and enthusiasm for angel investing with his keen interest in entrepreneurs. Todd founded the Seattle/Northwest Chapter of Keiretsu Forum in September of 2005, successfully completing the expansion of multiple chapters in Washington, as well as in Oregon and Idaho. To date membership has grown to over 230 private equity member/investors.
With over 18 years experience in the Northwest business community, Todd has cultivated his business acumen and relationship network with a start in sales under the firm mentorship of Bernard Rapaport. Todd is frequently sought out for speaking engagements, and also pens a regular column for the Seattle Business Monthly, which is the only of its kind in the Pacific NW specific to angel investing.
In keeping with his personal mission of giving back to the community, Todd is often engaged with local charities and non-profits. Annually, Todd and two colleagues distribute 900 gifts of blankets and small necessities to the growing population of Seattle’s homeless on Christmas morning.
As the Chapter President, Todd is also responsible for all aspects of membership development and outreach activities within his role as President of the Northwest Region of Keiretsu Forum. Currently residing in Redmond, Todd’s main passion centers around his family, his partner Dana and their five boys, coupled with an uncompromised joy for his work.
Group Study Exchange (GSE) Vocational Day Needs
Rotary District 5030 is coordinating vocational days for the incoming Group Study Exchange teams from India and France. Among our responsibilities is to provide opportunities for these outstanding visitors to observe vocations throughout our District on Wednesday, April 29, Tuesday May 5th, Wednesday May 13th, and Wednesday, May 20th.
We are looking for Rotarians who either have connections with or work with the following: alternative medicine (Bastyr University), local newspaper, graphic design, educational institutions, training department, tourism, financial and management analysis, structural engineering maintenance and manufacturing, aeronautics, banking administration, and logistics management (harbor companies and transportation).
If you are interested in hosting a GSE team at your work location for several hours or have any Rotarian connections that may be interested, please contact John Strathy (Ph 425-922-2995).
Don’t forget to RSVP for the May 9 auction. Our goal is for each Rotarian to invite at least two other couples to the event. The more bidders, the more money we raise! We have a lot of fantastic auction items lined up this year. Want to get away? We have trips to Mexico, Palm Desert, Whistler, and Africa. Cruises, too! Look for previews of more auction items in next week’s bulletin! |

Camp Goodtimes Offers Two Sessions — Need Volunteers!
SAVE THE DATE! |
Camp Goodtimes is now offering 2 sessions: June 28-July 4 and July 26-August 1. We expect over 200 children with cancer to come to camp this year. For this to happen, we need 140 volunteers and have been working very hard to find applicants. If you have kids over 18, friends, or employees who might be available either week, ask them to go to www.campgoodtimeswest.org to apply on line.
In addition to cabin counselors, we need program staff and support staff. The camp is on nearby Vashon Island, the cabins are modern, the beach is wonderful, and everyone who comes has a great week. Contact Charlotte Ellis for more information.
Upcoming Tour of the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center
The Environmental Committee, with the assistance of Jim Price, has organized a field trip at the recently completed Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center on Saturday, April 25th, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. All Rotarians and guest are welcome to join the tour, which will begin at 9:00 am with a guided walk through the slough, followed by a 10:00 am tour of the new facilities. Jerry Henry, Puget Sound Energy, and Park Ranger Christina Dyson Farrell will be our guides.
The new Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center provides a grand entrance to the Mercer Slough Nature Park. Completed in October 2008, the complex features classrooms, a visitor center, a community building and a "tree house," all sustainably built. The City of Bellevue and the Pacific Science Center offer year-round education about wetlands and nature for adults, youth and families at the center.
For more information, please contact Jim Price.
REMINDER: District Conference May 1-3, Victoria, BC
If you have not yet signed up for the District Conference, please do so soon. The exchange rate is now favorable, making the excursion less expensive. You can register online here at the Rotary District Website.
Note that due to the difficult economic climate, the registration has now been reduced by $25.00 per person. If you have already registered and paid the initial registration fee, you will be given a $25.00 refund at the check-in.
The main emphasis is FELLOWSHIP and FUN. There is a Thursday Golf Tournament and a Thursday night Pub Crawl. If you don't do well in the tournament, you might especially enjoy the Pub Crawl. There will also be a winery tour and a tour of the Buchart Gardens. You can also explore the historic waterfront and Chinatown.
