THIS WEEK's PROGRAM

Carl Edlund, Microsoft
"The Serious Business of Building Games"

Carl EdlundCarl Edlund, Ph. D., brings over 24 years of professional experience together as a manager of software development teams building some of the most complicated and broadly-used products at Microsoft.

Professionally, Carl is currently the Software Development Lead for Internet Explorer’s Developer Experience and Web Platform team building Internet Explorer 8 and Windows-7. Previously, he spent six years as the Development Manager for Software and Data Production of Microsoft entertainment simulation titles, including numerous prototype products: Flight Simulator (FSX, FS2004, and FS2002), Combat Flight Simulator (CFS2, CFS3), Train Simulator, and the Microsoft Enterprise Simulation Platform (MS-ESP). Before that, he spent four and a half years as a Senior Developer architecting and implementing the Layout/Printing engine and DHTML script APIs in Internet Explorer 4, 5, and 6.

Academically, Carl went through the Ph.D. program at the University of Pittsburgh in Information Science, with a dissertation on the automation of interface design for visualization and networked command and control systems of physical facilities. As the founder and owner of Edlund Engineering Consultants, he applied this work to the design of operator stations used in helicopter flight simulators, steel mill furnaces, chemical manufacturing labs, and greenhouse and office-building environmental control systems. Carl attended the State University of New York at Albany, where he received a Masters of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics. In his free time Carl also completed a Ph.D. in Religion from Universal Seminary in Pheonix, AZ, and has written numerous faith-based children stories, some of which were published.

Carl has also spent five years teaching for the State University of New York in the area of Computer Science and Business Technology and working as the IT department for the New York State Bar Association.
