THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Bartlett Sher
Artistic Director, Intiman Theatre
"Why Art Matters: Thoughts About Everyday Fictions"

Bulletin ImageBartlett Sher has been Artistic Director of Intiman Theatre, recipient of the 2006 Regional Theatre Tony Award, since 2000. He received a 2006 Tony nomination for his direction of Awake and Sing! by Clifford Odets and 2005 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critic Circle nominations for his direction of The Light in the Piazza by Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel, both for Lincoln Center Theater.

At Intiman, which was named Organization of the Year by the Municipal League of King County in 2006, Mr. Sher most recently directed Shakespeare’s Richard III. Other Intiman credits include Chekhov’s Three Sisters, in a new adaptation by Craig Lucas; the American Cycle production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town; and the world premieres of Singing Forest by Craig Lucas and Nickel and Dimed, Joan Holden’s adaptation of the nonfiction best-seller by Barbara Ehrenreich.

Mr. Sher received the 2002 Callaway Award and Lortel and Drama Desk nominations for his production of Cymbeline at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York. That play marked his Intiman directing debut and, produced by Theatre for a New Audience, went on to become the first American Shakespeare production at the Royal Shakespeare Company. For TFANA he has also directed Waste (American premiere, 2000 Best Play OBIE), Don Juan and Pericles. Mr. Sher served as associate artistic director at Hartford Stage and company director at The Guthrie Theater under his mentor, Garland Wright. He made his opera-directing debut with Mourning Becomes Electra for Seattle Opera and New York City Opera, and this season directs a new production of The Barber of Seville for the Metropolitan Opera, opening in November.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)

RYLA is a Rotary youth program designed to provide leadership training, demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concern for youth, and publicly recognize the high qualities of young people who are rendering service to their communities as youth leaders.

Applicants should be high school juniors who have demonstrated a desire and some ability as a responsible leader. These students do not necessarily have to be the student body president, but they must have high character and a constructive attitude.

If you have a child or grandchild who would benefit from this program, please contact Glen Curda for details.

Rotary Membership Survey
John Martinka, Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club

I am part of a membership team to increase membership and retention in District 5030, especially among members under the age of 40. To help achieve this goal I am conducting some focus groups to find out why under-40 members joined Rotary, what they like, don't like and why they remain in Rotary.

I have three focus groups scheduled and a fourth to follow in the South County area. I promise these focus groups will last no longer than 90 minutes.

Please join me on the following dates and at the following places from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

December 5, Rotary offices, 7834 SE 32nd, Suite 201 Mercer Island

December 6, 1201 3rd Avenue, 29th floor, Seattle (Washington Mutual building)

December 7, 10900 NE 8th, Suite 900 Bellevue (Plaza Center building)

Please let me know if you can make it and to which meeting. Not only do we need you at one of these sessions but we need a minimum of five people at each to make it worthwhile. Please try to take the time to attend one of these so we can get your input.

If you can't make it to a session, a survey is available here. Please download it, complete it, and email it back to me (Ph 425-576-1814).

Project Amigo
Bill Jeude

Bulletin ImageProject Amigo is an organization started by Kirkland Rotarian Ted Rose several years ago. It is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to enable the poor children of Colima to achieve their highest potential by providing educational opportunities, material support, enrichment activities, and medical and dental services not otherwise available to them.

Project Amigo facilitates partnerships between North American and Mexican Rotary Clubs to sponsor projects which benefit the children and their families. The BRC and I, personally, have sponsored some of their projects and several of their orphans through scholarships over the past several years. Project Amigo is also a registered Rotary International Volunteer site, and Rotarians wishing to volunteer for 1 to 2 months may be eligible for Rotary International Volunteer grants.

For more information on this worthwhile organization, visit their website, and perhaps remember Project Amigo when you are asked to make a donation to a “favorite charity.” Our administrative costs are low, and the benefits to the children we serve are high.

Campbells Click For Cans
Brad Hunt

Bulletin ImageHere is a project that our Bellevue High School Student of the Month, Connor Bogin, is working on. It is a quick and easy way to help the hungry in our community. Please take a minute to look at and help.

Click for Cans is a program sponsored by Campbell's Soup.  The way it works is that every time you vote for your local NFL team, Campbell's donates a can of food to your local food shelter.  Everyone can do it once a day and there is more than a week left in the food drive. It will take about 15-30 seconds a day and the results will be very beneficial to the community, especially during the cold winter season.

To participate, click here. Then click on VOTE NOW. Find the Seattle Seahawks and fill in the code at the bottom of the page.  Finally, click on SUBMIT YOUR VOTE.

This is a simple way that we can make a difference.
