Gene Duvernoy, Director, Cascade Land Conservancy Gene Duvernoy
Under his leadership, the Cascade Land Conservancy has risen to national prominence with its development of bold, innovative and successful conservation strategies. It has become a strong proponent in the ecological stewardship of lands. The CLC operates with about 45 employees and maintains a strong financial condition with assets in excess of $20 million. In May 2005, Duvernoy was one of the founders of The Cascade Agenda, a regional framework that focuses on conserving great landscapes and creating great communities. Duvernoy is a strong advocate of the two goals of The Cascade Agenda. One is conservation of a million acres of working farms and forests plus about 265,000 acres of lands that need to be preserved outright because of their special character. The other is working to create great communities. Duvernoy believes that if the region does not have strong communities that attract and retain people, we will never succeed in conserving land on the scale we envision. Prior to joining the CLC, Duvernoy’s parks and open space work included directing the King County Farmland Preservation Program and developing and implementing the 1989 King County Park and Open Space Bond Program. He has also held positions with government, research institutions and law firms as well as running his own consulting practice. Duvernoy has been instrumental in the conservation of more than $500 million of critical resource lands and landscapes over his career, including about 130,000 acres as President of the Cascade Land Conservancy. In 2004 the Municipal League of King County recognized his work with its Jim Ellis Regional Leader Award. He has served on numerous boards and citizen groups, including the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition, the Urban Land Institute, and the King County Parks Futures Task Force. • • • Peter Orser
