This Week, November 14:
He joined the University of Washington's School of Oceanography faculty in 1977, winning the Teaching Award in 1980 and the Distinguished Research Award in 1991. He was a visiting scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute and Johnson Space Center from 1977 to 1980. His research focuses on the deep-sea volcanic activity of the Juan de Fuca Ridge in the northeast Pacific Ocean. He has served as chief scientist on over forty oceanographic research cruises, many of which have included the Deep Submergence Vehicle Alvin and the Remotely Operated Vehicle Jason. In September 2005, Delaney co-led the VISIONS05 expedition, which successfully broadcast the first-ever live high-definition video imagery from the seafloor. The general public was able to view these live broadcasts from the Juan de Fuca Ridge via cable TV on the ResearchChannel and over the web. In the summer of 1998, Delaney led a joint expedition with the American Museum of Natural History to successfully recover four volcanic sulfide structures from the Ridge. This U.S./Canadian effort was the subject of a NOVA/PBS documentary. Other activities and honors include being named a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 1995; co-leading the development and launch of the REVEL professional-development program that takes science teachers to sea; and serving on the National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education. Proposed New Member: Everett Stitz Pursuant to our Rotary Bylaws, the following member has been proposed for membership in Bellevue Rotary after having been approved by the Classification and Membership Committees and Board of Directors. His name will be published in this Bulletin. If no objections are received within ten (10) days, induction will be arranged.
Rotary Art Event, November 14th The Bellevue Rotary Club has many members who not only appreciate fine art, but who also create it. This event will be a casual evening get-together where club members can bring one or two pieces of art, with a description attached of the work (painting, photo, or other art), or explain to attendees the significant points of their art. The event will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 14th, at 1980 112th Ave. NE, #270, Bellevue. The cost is $10 per person, and dress is casual. Contact Jim Price (Ph 425-453-9292, ext. 110) or Kathy Hanson (Ph 425-637-2033) for further information. A Message From the Facilities Committee What would you like for lunch? Your Facilities Committee has been conspiring to keep costs down. Last year our club was guaranteeing the Harbor Club 140 meals at each luncheon. After some very careful counting, it was determined we were only serving 118 meals per lunch. Therefore, this year we contracted for 120 meals per lunch. Attendance has remained roughly the same. However, at times we have run out of hot meals or salads. At every lunch there are only so many meals made of each type. What does all this mean to you? Club Environment Project: Adopt-A-Stream
The stream being adopted is Valley Creek, winding through Highland Park, near 140th and Northup Way. Activities for the day will include clean-up/removal of over overgrown blackberries and other vegetation and, depending on how much area has been cleared and if money is available to purchase plants, replanting the area with native shrubs and plants. The Saturday project is sheduled to run from 9:00am till noon at Highland Park, on 140th, across the street from the Safeway. Parking is near the baseball diamonds by the YMCA or in the Safeway parking lot. Please contact BJ Rasmussen if you have questions or to sign-up. All hosts have confirmed event dates, so block calendars now for the following fantastic fellowship functions:
Prior to sign-ups, information on event registration fees and other details will be posted. Please protect the time and stay tuned! Check Classification Listing Online! Please remember to check the BRC Classification Report online (username and password required) to make certain there is indeed room in a specific classification PRIOR to approaching a prospective member about his/her joining the Bellevue Rotary Club. Each classification has a limit of 20 members in that classification, so a quick check of the Classification Report might save time and possibly some embarrassment when approaching a prospective member. If you have any questions regarding member classifications, please contact Membership Classification Chairperson . |
