“Envision a World Free of Poverty"

Tim Hanstad, RDI President and CEO, has nearly 20 years of experience in research, consulting, and writing devoted to expanding land access, improving land tenure security, and developing land markets for the benefit of the rural poor in developing and transitional economies. His field experience includes 14 countries in Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

From mid-2001 to mid-2003, Mr. Hanstad was based in India, where he launched and developed RDI’s India program. In August 2006, Tim returned to RDI’s India office for another two year stay. His experience in India includes field research in nine Indian states, on topics including homestead plot access and benefits, tenancy, land administration, and gender issues. He has also conducted numerous workshops and consulted with land officials from most Indian states, central-level policymakers, and from the World Bank on various land policy reform topics.

Mr. Hanstad also teaches at the University of Washington School of Law, where he co-directs a graduate program in Law of Sustainable International Development. He holds a J.D. (1988) and an LL.M. (1994) from the University of Washington School of Law, and B.A. from Seattle Pacific University (1985) in Political Science and History.

A Message From the Facilities Committee

What would you like for lunch?
A salad? A hot meal?
The choice depends on YOU!

Your Facilities Committee has been conspiring to keep costs down. Last year our club was guaranteeing the Harbor Club 140 meals at each luncheon. After some very careful counting, it was determined we were only serving 118 meals per lunch. Therefore, this year we contracted for 120 meals per lunch. Attendance has remained roughly the same. However, at times we have run out of hot meals or salads. At every lunch there are only so many meals made of each type.

What does all this mean to you?
Come early to lunch and eat what you want. Come late and eat what you get!

Club Environment Project: Adopt-A-Stream

On Saturday, December 2, for anyone and everyone who is interested in doing some manual labor for 2-3 hours, the BRC will begin its "Adopt-A-Stream" project. This is a great service project for red badgers, blue badgers, college students, high school students, scouts, etc., and will continue for at least the next two years.

The stream being adopted is Valley Creek, winding through Highland Park, near 140th and Northup Way. Activities for the day will include clean-up/removal of over overgrown blackberries and other vegetation and, depending on how much area has been cleared and if money is available to purchase plants, replanting the area with native shrubs and plants.

The Saturday project is sheduled to run from 9:00am till noon at Highland Park, on 140th, across the street from the Safeway. Parking is near the baseball diamonds by the YMCA or in the Safeway parking lot.

Regional PolioPlus Dinner

Rotarians from across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest of the USA will attend a PolioPlus Celebration Dinner on Friday, January 19, 2007, at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel, 3500 Cessna Drive, Richmond, BC. There will be a no-host bar at 6:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. Registration is $80.00 per person, all proceeds from this gala event will be in support of Rotary’s PolioPlus Partners initiative.

For more than 20 years Rotary has been the driving force of the coalition of organizations that are committed to the eradication of polio. The world is NOT polio free - however the end is near. There are only four polio endemic countries. More than 99% of the world’s children are not at risk of contracting polio.

On January 19, we will celebrate our success to date and recommit to the promise Rotarians made to the children of the world: “they will grow up in a polio free world.”

This very special evening will feature as a keynote speaker, Dr. Bob Scott, Past Vice President of Rotary International, Rotary Foundation Trustee and chair of Rotary’s PolioPlus Committee. Bob Scott spearheaded the three year Polio Eradication Fundraising campaign that raised more than US$180 million from Rotarians worldwide.

Bob Scott, born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, graduated in medicine from Edinburgh University in 1957 with distinction in dermatology and chest diseases. Following his military service, he began thirty-four years of general practice first in North Wales and then in Ontario, Canada. A member of the Rotary Club of Cobourg since 1971. Bob has been a member of many International Committees and Task Forces. He has taken part in National Immunization Days in India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Egypt.

Regional Rotary Foundation Seminar

A Zone Regional Rotary Foundation Seminar will be held in Vancouver (Richmond) on January 20, 2007.
