John Haynes
At the University of Notre Dame, Mr. Haynes was selected as only the second recipient of an endowed chair in the arts in the University’s 160 year history, when he was named as the inaugural “Leighton Director for the Performing Arts” in 2003. He received the Notre Dame President’s Award for excellence the following year. As an arts leader John has also been active in the business community, serving on the boards of the San Diego North Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the San Diego Economic Development Council, Escondido Chamber of Commerce, Minneapolis Downtown Redevelopment Council and California State University College of Business. Drawing on his background as the president of a computer services company in the 1980s, he was one of the first nonprofit arts leaders to incorporate new technologies into every aspect of theatre management and production. John is a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, attended the University of Texas, and, after having lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Diego, and South Bend, is happy to call Bellevue home. He is a member of Bellevue Rotary and lives in the Bridle Trails neighborhood with his wife Lori and daughter Kate. Fellowship: Visit to Seattle Biomedical Research Institute

Bequests to the Bellevue Rotary Foundation For years, Rotarians have had the opportunity to leave a legacy by making specific bequests to Rotary International in their estate plans. This has allowed Rotarians to support international service. Bellevue Rotary is now providing a new estate planning option by allowing specific bequests to the “Bellevue Rotary Foundation Community Service Endowment Fund” to support community service. If you’d like to leave a legacy that supports your local community through Bellevue Rotary, please consider updating your estate plan. If you have any questions please contact President-Elect Rich Herzberg. Rob Rose is finalizing the arrangements for the Rotary trip in February to Nepal. Having enough volunteer travelers will mean being able to bring much-needed clothes, school supplies and laptop computers for Nepali kids. Please contact Rob if you are interested in going on the trip by the end of October. Bellevue Rotary Introduces New "Pathfinders" Program Bellevue Rotary has created a member mentoring program which has been named "Pathfinders. " The purpose of the program is to assist new members (or even existing members) who need extra assistance in integrating into club activities. By getting new and existing members working together to focus on a member's first year of Rotary, the experience is expected to be much more inclusive, productive and fun. In short, a new member would have a mentor to show them the ropes, help integrate and navigate what can sometimes be a much slower acclamation process. We are seeking volunteers who are willing to be mentors for six months to one year to a new Rotary member, most likely a red badger, not to take the place of the red badge/blue badge chair, but to compliment the experience. The mentor would be matched by the Pathfinder Committee to help the red badger through the first six months or so to feel more connected. This would require the mentor to sit with the new member at lunches or Rotary events, make introductions to members, assist with information on committees, projects, classification — helpful navigator, so to speak. We also need a Pathfinder Committee to help set up the program, clarify roles in the program, match members and mentors, and monitor and report the success of the Program. Rotary Board members are joining in on this project, but we need additional volunteers. The pathfinder Program Chair is Nita Petry. Her contact information is nita_petry@ajg.com, phone: 425-974-4447. 2008-09 Bellevue Rotary Community Grants The 2008-09 Bellevue Rotary Community Grants Bellevue Rotary is soliciting applications for community service grants until October 15, 2008. The funds must be community service oriented, beneficial primarily to the residents of the City of Bellevue and secondarily to residents of the neighboring Eastside cities. 2. Funds will be granted for capital investments in service projects and not for general operating expenses such as overhead and salary, etc. 3. The maximum grant per organization is $5,000. 4. A simple Letter of Inquiry must be filled out and received by October 15, 2008.
Upon favorable review, a Full Request may then be requested by a Bellevue Rotarian of the Community Grants Committee for final review.
