Simon B. "Bobby" Engram III
Bobby is married to Deanna, and they have three children: daughter Bobbi, 10, and sons Dean, 8, and Trey, 3. Daughter Bobbi was born with the hereditary disease sickle cell anemia. Since then, Bobby has been involved in raising awareness and funding to find an acceptable cure for sickle cell. Engram actively participates in advocacy and works with Washington State legislatures to raise awareness for sickle cell funding and research. He is also involved with the Northwest Sickle Cell Collaborative, a partnership formed to educate and support families who are dealing with sickle cell disease. In 2006, Bobby established the Walk for Sickle Cell Disease, and it has been an annual fundraising event ever since. August 31, 2008, marked the third year of the walk and the first year hosted under the Bobby Engram Foundation—the foundation created in June 2008 by Bobby and Deanna, which “strives to provide hope, courage and opportunity to underprivileged children who suffer from chronic pain that affects their lives physically or emotionally.” To no surprise, Bobby was named the Seattle Seahawks 2007 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for his community work as well as the Steve Largent Award. In August 2007, he spoke at the Lenny Wilkens Foundation Dinner & Auction, raising money for the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Washington. He is also supportive of Seattle teammates’ foundation fundraisers. Bellevue Rotary Introduces New "Pathfinders" Program Bellevue Rotary has created a member mentoring program which has been named 'Pathfinders. " The purpose of the program is to assist new members (or even existing members) who need extra assistance in integrating into club activities. By getting new and existing members working together to focus on a member's first year of Rotary, the experience is expected to be much more inclusive, productive and fun. In short, a new member would have a mentor to show them the ropes, help integrate and navigate what can sometimes be a much slower acclamation process. We are seeking volunteers who are willing to be mentors for six months to one year to a new Rotary member, most likely a red badger, not to take the place of the red badge/blue badge chair, but to compliment the experience. The mentor would be matched by the Pathfinder Committee to help the red badger through the first six months or so to feel more connected. This would require the mentor to sit with the new member at lunches or Rotary events, make introductions to members, assist with information on committees, projects, classification — helpful navigator, so to speak. We also need a Pathfinder Committee to help set up the program, clarify roles in the program, match members and mentors, and monitor and report the success of the Program. Rotary Board members are joining in on this project, but we need additional volunteers. The pathfinder Program Chair is Nita Petry. Her contact information is nita_petry@ajg.com, phone: 425-974-4447.
We have had 18 partner projects submitted by 12 Nepali Rotary and Rotaract Clubs. Each project addresses a different set of issues for Nepal’s population with disabilities from providing hearing aids for the hearing impaired to manufacturing orthopedic shoes for children with disability. We have a number of District 5030 Rotary clubs already matched up with Nepali Rotary partners, but we need more clubs to step up and be a part of this comprehensive effort to uplift and empower people with disabilities in Nepal! To find out more about the projects and which ones still need partners, please contact Sandy Clark and/or check out the project website. The new facility includes a kitchen, showers, laundry facilities, computers, phones, comfortable seating and an eating area. Since opening in December 2006, the Center has served 226 women with essential services and ongoing referrals to help build self-sufficiency. Made possible through partnerships and funding from local governments, churches, individuals and businesses, this is an opportunity for the YWCA to share a vital community resource. The BRC adopted Valley Creek two years ago as part of the City of Bellevue's "Stream Team" program. All Rotarians and guests are welcome to join the work party, and it does qualify as a service project for members of the red badge brigade looking to cross that item off your list. Highland Park is on 140th (across from the Safeway) between Bel-Red Road and Northup Way. Please contact BJ Rasmussen if you have any questions. 2008-09 Bellevue Rotary Community Grants The 2008-09 Bellevue Rotary Community Grants Bellevue Rotary is soliciting applications for community service grants until October 15, 2008. The following are some of the guidelines, not limiting to: 1. The funds must be community service oriented, beneficial primarily to the residents of the City of Bellevue and secondarily to residents of the neighboring Eastside cities. 2. Funds will be granted for capital investments in service projects and not for general operating expenses such as overhead and salary, etc. 3. The maximum grant per organization is $5,000. 4. A simple Letter of Inquiry must be filled out and received by October 15, 2008.
Upon favorable review, a Full Request may then be requested by a Bellevue Rotarian of the Community Grants Committee for final review. The Community Grants Committee will then select the final list of grant proposals for approval by the Bellevue Rotary Executive Board.
