Rotary Clubs Set Up Computer Laboratories in Four Schools BELIZE, CENTRAL AMERICA - July 2007. Through a partnership between the Bellevue Rotary Club and the Belize City Rotary Club, new computer laboratories were established in three primary schools in the Central American country of Belize. An existing computer laboratory in a Belizean secondary school was likewise expanded through the effort. This project was funded with a $25,055 grant from the Rotary Foundation’s Humanitarian Grants Program, with the assistance of host and international Rotary Clubs, Rotary District 5030, and the Kirkland-based nonprofit organization, New World Villages. The schools receiving the computer laboratories are situated in poor rural sections of Belize. In addition to 20 refurbished computers, each laboratory was equipped with a printer, fax machine, digital camera, and all equipment necessary for LAN and Internet connectivity. The grant also included funding for teacher training and laboratory maintenance.
Our District Group Study Exchange Committee is looking for a Rotarian and four Team Members to spend a month in Peru next April 13th to May 12th. The requirements for the Rotarian Leader are a good ability to speak Spanish, a sense of adventure, ability to travel for four weeks and a commitment to building goodwill between Peru and Washington State. Requirements for Team Members are: must be between the ages of 25 and 40, ability to speak Spanish, not a Rotarian or blood relative of a Rotarian, and the ability to spend four weeks in Peru. Our club has historically taken a strong leadership position in the District GSE and it would be great to have a Bellevue Team Leader or Team Member. A connection with a Rotary Club will ensure the Team Member’s future commitment to Rotary’s mission and interaction. Further information about the trip and GSE are available at www.gse.rotary5030.org or call Jim Price or e-mail him at jprice@appraisalgroupnw.com. Team Leader applications are due by September 15th and Team Member applications are due October 10th. Rotary Day of Hunger Relief: Saturday October 13th, 2007
The work parties, which are scheduled to run from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, will provide an excellent opportunity for Rotarians to be involved in “hands-on” projects with local food banks in their own communities. At the culmination of these work parties on October 13, there will be a casual dress lunch celebration from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Montlake Community Center. This event will honor those Rotarians who have been involved over the years with this worthy project and will be highlighted by an awards ceremony honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to hunger relief efforts. The cost of the luncheon will be $25 per person. Space is limited, so please contact Katy as soon as possible to reserve your club's seats and receive your tickets for this event. Participants will enjoy cultural sightseeing and the opportunity to visit non-profits working in these two countries to see their projects and programs. In Cambodia, the group will travel to the area where more than 3 million landmines are still in the ground and watch deminers at work. The highlight will be a trip to the village we demined, where we will meet the villagers and present a plaque to them from Rotary.
