Governor Christine Gregoire
Chris is a former three-term Attorney General, the first woman to be elected to that position. As Attorney General, Chris gained national attention for the historic lawsuits against Big Tobacco, in which she was the lead negotiator. She also led the effort to recoup nearly $100 million from Enron for Washington residents. She also served as director of the Department of Ecology from 1988-1992, and launched the largest environmental cleanup project in the world at Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Chris was born in Auburn, and spent her childhood learning the value of hard work from her single mother, who worked as a short-order cook. After graduating from Auburn High School, Chris went to the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in speech and sociology. In 1971, she met her husband, Mike Gregoire, while they both worked at the Department of Social and Health Services. Chris received her law degree in 1977 from Gonzaga University. Chris and Mike have two daughters, Courtney and Michelle. Courtney is an attorney and Michelle just graduated from college with a major in environmental science. Annual Fall Golf Fellowship
Contact Brad Hunt for more information. 2008-09 Bellevue Rotary Community Grants The 2008-09 Bellevue Rotary Community Grants Bellevue Rotary is soliciting applications for community service grants until October 15, 2008. The following are some of the guidelines, not limiting to: 1. The funds must be community service oriented, beneficial primarily to the residents of the City of Bellevue and secondarily to residents of the neighboring Eastside cities. 2. Funds will be granted for capital investments in service projects and not for general operating expenses such as overhead and salary, etc. 3. The maximum grant per organization is $5,000. 4. A simple Letter of Inquiry must be filled out and received by October 15, 2008.
Upon favorable review, a Full Request may then be requested by a Bellevue Rotarian of the Community Grants Committee for final review. The Community Grants Committee will then select the final list of grant proposals for approval by the Bellevue Rotary Executive Board. Club members are encouraged to submit applications to serve as GSE Team Leaders for upcoming exchanges to India (01/24/09 to 02/23/09) and Southwest France (03/28/09 to 04/26/09). Fluency in French is required for the latter. Past President Gary Zimmerman has served as a Group Leader for several exchanges and would be happy to discuss the duties and benefits from serving in that position.
