This Week, July 25:
Beth Knox
President & CEO, SEAFAIR

“SEAFAIR — A Festival in the Fabric of Our Community”

Bulletin ImageBeth Knox serves as President and CEO of non-profit events organization, SEAFAIR, one of Seattle’s oldest, largest and most-loved summer celebrations featuring neighborhood parades, free family events, sports activities, and culminating with the Unlimited Hydroplane Race and Air Show.

Established in 1950, SEAFAIR operates on a $3 million budget with 10 full time staff, 15 seasonal employees and interns, a 35-member board of directors and 3,000 volunteers.

Beth actually began her career with Seafair 18 years ago, producing events and managing responsibilities in fundraising and corporate sponsorship. She joined One Reel, an arts and entertainment organization, in 1994 and over an eight-year period held leadership roles as Sales Director, Event Producer and Project Director.

In 2001, Beth was recruited to produce the Boise River Festival, a non-profit community organization with several large-scale events in Boise, Idaho. Her love for Seattle brought her back to One Reel in 2003 where she led the sales force and international marketing for the company’s European-style cabaret theatre, Teatro ZinZanni. Beth returned to her roots at SEAFAIR in July of 2005 as its President and CEO.

Beth came to Seattle by way of Michigan where she received her Bachelors degree in Advertising and Public Relations. She resides in Issaquah with her husband, Jim Maier, and nine-year-old twin boys, Jared and Lucas.

Camp Goodtimes
Charlotte Ellis

Bulletin ImageThe 30 Bellevue Rotarians and guests rolled into camp about 11:00 am on June 29th. They visited the Arts and Crafts cabin and made their own leather nametags to wear all day. The camp doctor then talked about medical aspects of the camp, and some kids had personal experiences to share.

Lunch was loud and fun, and after trips to the salad bar, we all ate grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

The carnival was, of course, the main event. Rotary rented six big inflatable games. Ross Jacobson and his girls kept the Bounce Arena safe for kids of all sizes all day. Brad Hunt, Sam Basta, Craig Campbell, and Steve Anderson helped everywhere and added lots of energy.

Individual Rotarians brought fun, “backyard-type” games like Gail Romero’s Galactic Golf, Elaine Heller’s Space Boots launch, and Rondi Bennett's Electric Basketball. The kids always look forward to Sam Esayian’s Jelly Bean guess contest and Gail Ryder’s squirt gun game. These two Rotarians have been to every camp and are now seasoned carnival operators, bringing their own stuff and running very smooth stations.

Our in-shape guys, Jason Courter, Bryan Piro and Brian Rayfield, pulled kids out of sweaty Sumo suits all afternoon. A hard job, and the kids loved it!

Andy Mirkovich and Mary worked the prize room to let all campers choose what they wanted.

It was a hot, sunny day and Leslie Lloyd’s Dunk Tank was very popular. The Butys, Shawn Rhode, and the Naselows made hundreds of sno-cones and cotton candy puffs. Jason Courter donated the bottled water that everyone enjoyed all afternoon.

Once again, no Rotarians joined into the whip cream throwing or subsequent water bucket dumping, fire engine spraying event following the take down of the carnival. Maybe next year?
