Honorable Debra L. Stephens, Washington State Supreme Court
Justice Stephens is firmly committed to public service and community involvement. She served for over a decade on the Board of Directors of the Orchard Prairie School District No. 123, and is also on the Board of Directors for the Spokane Valley Rotary Club. She has served as both a Deacon and Elder of Millwood Community Presbyterian Church; a member of the Sacred Heart Children’s Foundation “Joshua’s Hugs” fundraising circle; a Community Board Advisor for People for Environmental Action & Community Health (PEACH); a founding member and volunteer mentor for the Upward Bound Program; and a volunteer mentor for Gonzaga University undergraduate and graduate students. She has been a strong advocate for pro bono legal services, and was a volunteer supervising attorney at Gonzaga’s University Legal Assistance Clinic. She is a trustee of the Washington Judicial College, and serves on the Appellate Court Education Committee and the Court Rules Committee. Justice Stephens is a native of Spokane, Washington, the first judge from Division Three of the Court of Appeals to serve on the Washington State Supreme Court, and the first woman from Eastern Washington to do so. She graduated from West Valley High School, where she was student body president and a national “Century III Leader.” She attended Gonzaga University on a debate scholarship, graduating Magna Cum Laude with Honors in 1987, and later attended Gonzaga University School of Law as a Thomas More Scholar, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1993. Lunch Fee Increase Like many businesses, the club is faced with increasing expenses in the coming year. Annual contract negotiations with the Harbor Club resulted in a 21.7% increase in lunch expenses. In addition, club administration expenses will increase by 12% in the coming year. At their July meeting the Board of Directors reviewed 2008-2009 expenses and, as a result of a budget shortfall, approved a $3 increase in weekly lunch fees, effective July 1, 2008. Please contact me if you have questions regarding the increase. Request for Matching Grant Proposals Our world service committee will be studying and recommending international projects funding in the next following weeks. For maximum funding, we are strongly encouraging you to apply for Rotary Matching Grants as well. Matching funds are received from District 5030 and The Rotary International Foundation. Matching grants require paperwork and the involvement of a foreign Rotary Club. Generally, the funds from RI run out by the month of March. Therefore, we strongly urge that matching grant proposals be submitted ASAP. We are now asking for your proposed project grants to be submitted for consideration. Click here to downoad the grant proposal form (.doc) that needs to be completed and submitted to the committee for review. For Rotary Matching Grant forms, please go to the RI International website. As a guideline, our committee encourages projects that can generally support the following questions:
Our first World Service Committee project review will be on Tuesday, July 29th, following the club meeting. Please contact us if you have any questions. Recent Paul Harris Awards Photos
