There are already a number of people confirmed, so be sure and let Rob know soon if you’d like to go too! The Nepali Rotarians are warm and hospitable. The trip will include Rotary project visits, sightseeing and a volunteer day in Kathmandu. The Rotary friendships you’ll make along with the history and scenery in Nepal will make for a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Stay tuned to the weekly bulletin (online and printed) for updates on Rob's nepal journey. When the trip begins, we will be posting Rob's trip headlines as they come in with RSS feeds right here on the site. In the meantime, you can visit Rob's Rotary Nepal website to find out more about this project. Camp Goodtimes Once again Rotary Day at Camp Goodtimes was a huge success. We had just enough rain, sun, face paint, orange hair spray, cotton candy and Reddi Whip to make the day perfect. It was the first time Rotaract has joined us and they had a ball helping as needed and getting a twister game going. Jacobson's Dunk Tank was the favorite cooling off spot. Our campers like getting dunked more than throwing softballs. • • • Someone put up a big sheet of blue construction paper on the wall by the sink. It said "Wishes, Dreams, Hopes." There was a red marking pen by the paper. When camp was over, here is what was written:
Message From Your Sergeant At Arms: Rat on a Rotarian
Your spouse, SO, children, EX's and competitors are all solicited in this noble effort, one designed to raise funds for important club purpose! Suggest it wise to bring some US paper currency to meetings. In the warm, fuzzy (yet relentless) spirit of BRC Sergeant At Arms past, President Wilkinson Shows the World that Rotary Shares Wilfrid J. Wilkinson, 2007-08 RI president, has launched the new Rotary year as the year to “say yes to Rotary.” The RI theme, Rotary Shares, is a reflection of his commitment to share Rotary with others through service and recruiting new members. Wilkinson, a member of the Rotary Club of Trenton, Ontario, Canada, sees the concept of sharing as a motivating force behind Rotary work. “In choosing this theme, I thought about how much of Rotary is about sharing. We share our time, we share our talents, we share our money with others who need our help,” he told incoming district governors at the 2007 International Assembly in February. “In Rotary, sharing doesn’t mean giving away what you have to spare, what you don’t need for yourself,” he explained. “Sharing means giving of yourself, selflessly, for the good of others.” Wilkinson has chosen to continue immediate past president Bill Boyd’s emphases of water, health and hunger, literacy, and family of Rotary. “These basic needs have been at the forefront of Rotary’s efforts for several years now,” he says. “And I hope that they will continue, because with clean water, good health, and the ability to read and write, so many of the people who need help will find the ability to help themselves.” In a time of dwindling participation in service organizations worldwide, Wilkinson emphasizes the importance of commitment to membership expansion. “It’s not always an easy thing to invite someone into Rotary. Too often, we hear no. And no one likes to hear no. It’s easy to get discouraged. But you have to expect those no’s, and know when to ask again — and when to move on to find a yes somewhere else.” Equally important to Rotary’s future, says Wilkinson, is attention to programs for youth. “Working to strengthen our programs for youth helps ensure a new generation of responsible, ethical, and volunteer-minded people. [They] are our link to the future of Rotary which we ourselves will not see.” Presidential Membership Conference Rotary International President (2007-08) Wilf Wilkinson invites clubs, districts, and Rotarians to a Presidential Membership Conference in Vancouver, BC (Richmond) on Friday and Saturday, August 10-11, 2007. Rotarians from Canada, USA and international delegates will attend this outstanding event. This conference is one of only seven Presidential Membership Conference being held by RIP Wilf Wilkinson. Targeted to Rotary clubs, this conference will focus on the need for change and practical ways to increase membership, retain existing members, and extend Rotary through new clubs. Keynote speakers will include RI President Wilf Wilkinson, Past RIBI President John Hockin (from the UK) and an exceptional line up of speakers with experience in membership development. Speakers will include a non-Rotarian exploring changing community demographics and volunteering trends. The conference will feature interactive roundtable discussion opportunities to exchange ideas and best practices. Who should attend?
Conference details, agenda, list of speakers, hotel information and registration are all available at www.RotaryEvents.ca. Preferential hotel room rates are available and for those areas served by WestJet there are discount flights available. Many clubs see this conference as an investment in their club's future and are paying the registration and expenses of the club president and club membership chair. A net increase in the club's membership will recoup these costs. I hope to see you in August at the Presidential Membership Conference.
