Camp Goodtimes Carnival, June 29 Bellevue Rotary will again bring the best day of the whole summer to Camp Goodtimes on Vashon Island. Save Thursday, June 29th, for this fun event. We are expecting 140 kids with cancer, on or off treatment, and have arranged to rent carnival games for this day. Take the 10:20AM Fauntleroy/Vashon Ferry. If you can, share rides from the North lot at Lincoln Park at 10:00AM. The carnival is over at 4:30PM. Return at 5:00PM or a little later if you stop for pizza at the Rotary Happy Hour at Rock Island Pizza on Vashon Island. Driving directions to Camp Burton on the South End of Vashon, assignment confirmation, and the what-to-bring list will be emailed to everyone early in June. Questions? Contact Charlotte Ellis. • • • Driving Directions: If you’d like to car pool: Meet before 10 am in the north end of the north parking lot of Lincoln Park and go from there in fewer vehicles. Ferry schedule - the 10:20 from Fauntleroy is the best choice. Other times www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/ The crossing is 15 minutes and the drive south down the island to camp takes 25 minutes. Directions From Seattle: I-5 to Spokane St Exit #163, cross West Seattle Bridge, follow signs to Fauntleroy Way/Vashon Ferry. The ferry leaves about every half hour. When you arrive on Vashon Island you are on the Vashon Island Highway. Travel south on this road to 4th flashing red light (about 10 miles). In the little town of Burton (harbor on left, expresso stand and church on the right.) turn left at the general store, go up the hill. Follow main road to the right. In 1/2 mile see Camp Burton sign on the left and a sign for Office. • • • At Camp: Park in the area near Grisham Hall/office. After you sign in, campers will give you a short camp tour and take you to Arts & Crafts. You need a camp name for your very cool leather nametag. Mine is Lion Tamer. At 11:30 in the lower level of Burton Lodge, overlooking the Sound, a panel of medical staff and campers answer questions on childhood cancer and current treatments. Lunch at 12:00 noon upstairs in Burton Lodge. Rotarians and guests sit with kids on the main level. Campers sit in cabin groups, 8 campers, 2 Rotarians at each table. After lunch you can drive down to the carnival area and unload gear. The carnival is on the lower field near Burton Lodge. We have signs for booths or look for the field map to find your location. Starlight Foundation gave us terrific prizes and each camper will win one. Carnival starts at 2:00 and take down starts at 3:45. There will be a place for you to put away the equipment belonging to the camp. At 4:00 p.m. the traditional, always optional, pie-in-the-face-free- for-all and water fight begins (It is fun and there is a respected, guaranteed safety zone). You might want to bring a clean shirt if going out later. After leaving camp, we’ll meet on the patio of the Vashon Rock Island Pizza for drinks and pizza. Look for Rock Island in Vashon town on the right side a block north of the stop light and the Thriftway. • • • Bring With You Sunscreen, rain jacket, camera, and a folding patio chair/card table, if you wish. Camp has metal folding chairs and some big tables which are OK for us to use. My cell phone number is 425-443-6303. Vashon has uneven cell service. The land line message phone number at camp is 206-463-4075. Ask for Lion Tamer Rotary Global History Fellowship Fellow Rotarians, When I grew up as a little boy in Sweden, my father was a member of a small town Rotary Club. When I was eight, we moved to a suburb outside Stockholm. As soon as our new house was ready, it was filled with new friends, who I had never met before. They were all Rotarians and my father had transferred to the local Rotary Club of Huddinge, near Stockholm. Since I became a Rotarian, I have experienced that Rotarians can visit any Rotary Club in the world and immediately be accepted as friends, even if we have never been there before. There is a special bond between Rotarians everywhere in the world. We are united in Fellowship, Camaraderie and Service. Rotary’s Founder Paul Harris once said: If you have love for your fellow man in your heart, you are potential Rotarian. Rotarians have compassion and we care for those who are less fortunate. That’s why we help them in our Rotary Service. I have found that the essence of Rotary can be summarized in the word “Service”. We contribute to what is good for society. That’s why I am a Rotarian. Matts Ingemanson • • • You can also read about other Rotarians statements about “Why I am a Rotarian” on our website. Rotarians from all over the world will get together for the Rotary Convention in Malm – Copenhagen from June 11-14. We at Rotary Global History Fellowship will also be there in the House of Friendship. Our Convention Booth number is H-010. I will be there together with many of our board members. I look forward to meet as many of you as possible at the Rotary Convention! For those of you, who are not able to attend the Rotary Convention, you can visit us on the Internet at our following websites:
We had more than 76,000 visitors in May from Rotarians around the world to these websites. You can also become a member of our successful Rotary Fellowship. The membership due for one year is very reasonable at $25 per year with $100 for five years membership. You can pay online over the Internet by following these steps:
You can also pay for your membership via mail by filling out this form and mailing it with a check in the amount of $25 or $100. • • • Rotary Founder Paul Harris wrote in the Rotarian, August 1926:
It is important to understand Rotary History when we shape the Future of Rotary. Matts Ingemanson 2007-2008 Ambassadorial & Cultural Scholarship Applications Are Available Rick Taylor
