THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Martin Tobias, CEO and Chairman
Imperium Renewables
"Biofuels & Alternative Energy"

Bulletin ImageMartin Tobias is the CEO and Chairman of Imperium Renewables and a Venture Partner at Ignition Partners. He joined Imperium Renewables to drive strategic direction in May 2005, after personally investing in the company in mid 2005 following a multiyear search for the right alternative energy investment. Martin has been with Ignition Partners since 2002 working with the infrastructure software and networking team. He has invested in over two dozen start-ups and currently serves on the board of Cloudmark.

Prior to Ignition, Martin spent 15 years in operating roles in technology companies. Martin was the Founder, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of Loudeye Technologies, Inc. (former LOUD now part of Nokia (NOK) ), a pioneer in digital media production, distribution, and applications. Under his leadership, the company raised over $175M (including an IPO) and grew to be one of the largest providers of digital media enabling solutions for the Internet.

Prior to Loudeye, Martin spent six years with Microsoft in operational management roles and four years with Andersen Consulting (Accenture). Martin received his bachelor's degree in marketing and computer science from Oregon State University, and he holds two technology patents.

Martin and his wife Alex were profiled in the 1997 Harley movie "Biker Dreams" and are involved in a number of charities through the Martin and Alex Tobias Foundation.

2007-2008 Rotary Committee Preferences
Gary Zimmerman, President-Elect

Planning for the next Rotary year is rapidly taking shape. The theme of 2007-2008 RI President Wilfrid J Wilkinson is “Rotary Shares,” and he urges us to continue to emphasize the four key service areas — literacy, water management, health and hunger, and the family of Rotary. Our club efforts this year also will support these themes. Your support of Bellevue Rotary Club’s committee structure will ensure that the club will work effectively to accomplish its goals for the year.

If you haven't yet returned the email with your committee choices marked by committee NUMBER, rather than name, please do so as soon as possible to either Laurie Larson or me.

If you wish to serve on more than one committee, and we hope you will, please feel free to make that notation. Please keep in mind that Bellevue Rotary Club Bylaws discourage members from serving on the same committee for more than 3 consecutive years.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Camp Goodtimes: Great Response from Bellevue Rotarians!
Charlotte Ellis
Bulletin ImageThe Rotary Carnival at Camp Goodtimes is the highlight of the summer for area children with cancer and their siblings who attend camp. Bellevue Rotarians and their guests make this day possible.

This year, our theme is The Circus, and we hope everyone will get makeovers from our Gene Juarez stylists, back for the 10th year.

Camp is held on Vashon Island; take the Fauntleroy Ferry. Come mid-morning and plan on spending the day. You will have as much fun as the kids! We have lunch at camp with the campers and stop for pizza and beverages at Rock Island Pizza before heading for the 6:00 pm ferry back to Seattle. Look for more information and sign-up sheets in May.

Great Response from Bellevue Rotarians!

The following Rotarians are on the Camp Goodtimes list for the carnival June 28th.

Brian Rayfield, Brad Hunt, Patti Skelton, Bryon Piro, John Huygens, Peter Kalunian, Phil Bevan, Gail Ryder, Kathy Korth, Steve Anderson, Frank Buty, Peter Swindley, Shawn Rhode, Dennis Conrad, Rob Rose, Jason Courter, Cecille Schuman, Craig Campbell, Carmen Aguiar.

If your name is not on the list and you plan to come, if you can bring an activity, have an assignment preference, or have questons, please email Charlotte Ellis.

Bellevue Rotary has contracted with All-Star Events to provide big inflatable games such as a bounce house, slide, and dunk tank. In addition we will make cotton candy, sno-cones and serve drinks. We want at least 2 adults for each game.

We need some of you to bring additional activities like backyard type games. For example, the campers really enjoy fun things like:

  • bubble blowing

  • a hole in one putting game (using a carpet runner and tin can)

  • penny toss into a jar, or M and M’s

  • guessing # of jelly beans in a container

  • bubble gum blowing contest

  • cookie, cup cake decorating

  • ring toss game

  • temporary tattoos

  • face painting

We have a large mostly flat playing field and access to electricity and water. Your Carnival "booth" can be a card table and we’ll make signs and have prizes to give out to everyone.

Wear camp clothes and tennis shoes, bring sunglasses and maybe your lawn chair If you think you might enjoy participating in the whipped cream/water fight at the end, bring a towel and change of clothes, too.

Presidential Membership Conference
Chris Offer, PDG & Chair, Presidential Membership Conference

Rotary International President (2007-08) Wilf Wilkinson invites clubs, districts, and Rotarians to a Presidential Membership Conference in Vancouver, BC (Richmond) on Friday and Saturday, August 10-11, 2007.

Rotarians from Canada, USA and international delegates will attend this outstanding event. This conference is one of only seven Presidential Membership Conference being held by RIP Wilf Wilkinson. Targeted to Rotary clubs, this conference will focus on the need for change and practical ways to increase membership, retain existing members, and extend Rotary through new clubs.

Keynote speakers will include RI President Wilf Wilkinson, Past RIBI President John Hockin (from the UK) and an exceptional line up of speakers with experience in membership development. Speakers will include a non-Rotarian exploring changing community demographics and volunteering trends. The conference will feature interactive roundtable discussion opportunities to exchange ideas and best practices.

Who should attend?

  • Club membership committee chairs and members

  • Club presidents and club officers

  • District membership committee chairs and members

  • District Governor, DGE, DGN, AG and past officers

  • All Rotarians enthused about strengthening Rotary

Conference details, agenda, list of speakers, hotel information and registration are all available at www.RotaryEvents.ca. Preferential hotel room rates are available and for those areas served by WestJet there are discount flights available.

Many clubs see this conference as an investment in their club's future and are paying the registration and expenses of the club president and club membership chair. A net increase in the club's membership will recoup these costs.

I hope to see you in August at the Presidential Membership Conference.
