Gene Openshaw
Gene's slideshows on Europe emphasize its cultural treasures — the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's David, the Roman Colosseum, the magic of Venice, pasta primavera, and so on. He has given these talks to both travelers and armchair travelers, stressing the nuts and bolts of travel (budget tips, transportation, language) or the art, history and contemporary color. Some of his slideshows have included:
Beat the High Cost of Travel — Enjoy a Free Week on the Beach at Nearby Vashon Island
No direct camping experience is necessary, as new staff are partnered with returning staff and attend a 2-day staff training just prior to camp. However, you must love kids and believe that play, laughter, kindness and friendships are of highest value. Expect to go full out all week, as you keep kids, safe, busy and happy. You must be high energy, flexible and have excellent judgment and personal references. The camp is medically supervisored and most children are quite well and able to do all activities. Others need help getting to activities and lots of positive encouragement. Campers ages range from 7-17, and staff must be at least one year out of high school. Average staff age is 28. Camp dates are June 20-28. Staff must be at camp for the full week, and there are 4 staff positions are open for men, 2 for women.
Recycle Cell Phones to Benefit Troops Overseas Bellevue Rotary, along with Seattle #4 and other clubs in our district, are participating in a great Rotary service opportunity: a program to recycle unused cell phones and use the proceeds to help our military personnel stay in touch with loved ones. During the month of June, we are partnering with CellPhones for Soldiers (CFS), a national non-profit organization, to recycle old cellphones, Blackberries and other PDA’s and their related components (including batteries and chargers). The proceeds from the recycling are used to purchase long distance telephone cards that are given free to our troops serving overseas. It’s good for the environment (we keep the devices and their toxic metals out of landfills), and it’s a simple, meaningful way to support our troops! The Seattle PI is supporting this project with ads through the month of June, making it a true community-wide promotion. Rotarians are encouraged to drop off their old phones in the boxes that will be provided each week at our club meeting. Please direct questions to BJ Rasmussen. We hope you will participate in this community service effort!
