THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Gene Openshaw
Author/Composer/Tour Guide
"Europe Today"

Bellevue Rotary ClubGene Openshaw is an author, composer, tour guide, and lecturer on art and history. His infamous travels through Europe with Rick Steves, both before and after graduating from Stanford University, are documented in Rick's memoir Postcards from Europe. Gene went on to co-author several books with Rick, including Europe 101: History and Art for the Traveler, which makes Europe's cultural sights fun and easy to understand. Gene is also co-author of Rick Steves' city guidebooks on London, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, Florence, and Rome. His passion for Europe and his ability to bring art and history alive are well known by those who have used his books or attended his lectures.

Gene's slideshows on Europe emphasize its cultural treasures — the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's David, the Roman Colosseum, the magic of Venice, pasta primavera, and so on. He has given these talks to both travelers and armchair travelers, stressing the nuts and bolts of travel (budget tips, transportation, language) or the art, history and contemporary color. Some of his slideshows have included:

• Venice, Florence and Rome: the sights, people, and lifestyle of these three world-class cities.

• Europe 101: History and Art for Travelers: 5,000 years in 55 minutes, illustrated with Europe's most famous castles, cathedrals, and art.

• Italy's Art Treasures: The Sistine Chapel, Botticelli's Venus, St. Mark's Square ... 'nuff said?

• Europe Today: The rise of the European Union, from the rubble of World War II to its place as a global superpower challenging the United States

Beat the High Cost of Travel — Enjoy a Free Week on the Beach at Nearby Vashon Island

Bellevue Rotary ClubYes, that's right! All meals, lodging, entertainment, day-long Argosy cruise, dancing, biking, swimming and more are FREE! You will be assigned a 24/7 job at Camp Goodtimes helping children with cancer have a wonderful week.

No direct camping experience is necessary, as new staff are partnered with returning staff and attend a 2-day staff training just prior to camp. However, you must love kids and believe that play, laughter, kindness and friendships are of highest value.

Expect to go full out all week, as you keep kids, safe, busy and happy. You must be high energy, flexible and have excellent judgment and personal references. The camp is medically supervisored and most children are quite well and able to do all activities. Others need help getting to activities and lots of positive encouragement.

Campers ages range from 7-17, and staff must be at least one year out of high school. Average staff age is 28. Camp dates are June 20-28. Staff must be at camp for the full week, and there are 4 staff positions are open for men, 2 for women.

Download a camp brochure and or a Volunteer Application. If you have questions, contact Charlotte Ellis (Ph 425-443-6303) or Tom Nielsen, Camp Director (Ph 800-ACS-2345 or 206-674-4188).

Recycle Cell Phones to Benefit Troops Overseas
BJ Rasmussen

Bellevue Rotary, along with Seattle #4 and other clubs in our district, are participating in a great Rotary service opportunity: a program to recycle unused cell phones and use the proceeds to help our military personnel stay in touch with loved ones.

During the month of June, we are partnering with CellPhones for Soldiers (CFS), a national non-profit organization, to recycle old cellphones, Blackberries and other PDA’s and their related components (including batteries and chargers). The proceeds from the recycling are used to purchase long distance telephone cards that are given free to our troops serving overseas. It’s good for the environment (we keep the devices and their toxic metals out of landfills), and it’s a simple, meaningful way to support our troops!

Bellevue Rotary Club

The Seattle PI is supporting this project with ads through the month of June, making it a true community-wide promotion. Rotarians are encouraged to drop off their old phones in the boxes that will be provided each week at our club meeting.

Please direct questions to BJ Rasmussen. We hope you will participate in this community service effort!
