Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Health Discovery Program

"An Introduction to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — How We Use Science & Partners in our Work"

Bellevue Rotary ClubDr. Carol Dahl directs the Global Health Discovery program, which targets fundamental scientific and technological advances in global health that could lead to new ways to prevent, treat, and diagnose disease.

Prior to joining the foundation in 2003, Dahl served as Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at Biospect Inc., a company developing technology to inform the clinical management of patient health. From 1990 to 2001, Dahl worked in several capacities at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, including as founding Director of the Office of Technology and Industrial Relations at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Throughout her tenure in government, Dahl received numerous awards for her work stimulating innovative technologies, including DNA sequencing technology, bioengineering, bioimaging, and nanotechnology, as well as contributing to the launch of critical genomics resources such as the Tumor Gene Index.

She received postdoctoral training at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and the Immunobiology Research Center at the University of Minnesota and served on the faculty of the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

Recycle Cell Phones to Benefit Troops Overseas
BJ Rasmussen

Bellevue Rotary, along with Seattle #4 and other clubs in our district, are participating in a great Rotary service opportunity: a program to recycle unused cell phones and use the proceeds to help our military personnel stay in touch with loved ones.

During the month of June, we are partnering with CellPhones for Soldiers (CFS), a national non-profit organization, to recycle old cellphones, Blackberries and other PDA’s and their related components (including batteries and chargers). The proceeds from the recycling are used to purchase long distance telephone cards that are given free to our troops serving overseas. It’s good for the environment (we keep the devices and their toxic metals out of landfills), and it’s a simple, meaningful way to support our troops!

Bellevue Rotary Club

The Seattle PI is supporting this project with ads through the month of June, making it a true community-wide promotion. Rotarians are encouraged to drop off their old phones in the boxes that will be provided each week at our club meeting.

Please direct questions to BJ Rasmussen. We hope you will participate in this community service effort!

The Landing Dinner Donors
Jim Hogue

A new year is upon us, and we urge you to consider donating dinners to The Landing. Our club is continuing the tradition of donating these dinners at least every Sunday and Wednesday evenings for the Eastside homeless youth at this unique cooperative venture of the Bellevue YMCA and the Friends of Youth. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this program, click here to view the Donor Information Sheet.

You can sign up online for The Landing Dinner Donations and remember, donating counts as a make-up. Please contact Jim Hogue if you have any questions.
