THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

M. Grant Norton, Ph.D.
Herman and Brita Lindholm Endowed Chair and Professor
Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Programs
School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering
College of Engineering and Architecture
"Nanotechnology: The Power to Fuel an Energy Revolution"

Bulletin ImageM. Grant Norton envisions a day when filling up at the fuel pump will be a thing of the past. It’s a vision that relies on hydrogen gas, a potentially clean, alternative fuel that currently eludes our tanks, primarily because there are no reasonable mechanisms for storing the highly explosive gas.

Dr. Norton will address how nanotechnology could solve the latter problem. He and his colleagues are working to patent nanospring technology that would fit into an ordinary style gas tank, solving the problem of hydrogen storage.

Dr. Norton has published more than 160 research articles and two books, one on X-ray diffraction and one on ceramic materials. He belongs to several professional societies and is the editor of Journal of Materials Science. He helped to organize the International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies in Singapore in 2005, and is on the organizing committee for the International Symposium on Reactivity of Solids in Minneapolis in 2007. He has received awards for outstanding teaching from Materials Science and Engineering in 1994 and 1997, from the College of Engineering and Architecture in 1994, and received the ASEE Outstanding Teaching Award for the Pacific Northwest region in 1996. He was also presented with a best paper award, Materials Division of the American Society for Engineering Education in 2002.

2007-2008 Rotary Committee Preferences
Gary Zimmerman, President-Elect

Planning for the next Rotary year is rapidly taking shape. The theme of 2007-2008 RI President Wilfrid J Wilkinson is “Rotary Shares,” and he urges us to continue to emphasize the four key service areas — literacy, water management, health and hunger, and the family of Rotary. Our club efforts this year also will support these themes. Your support of Bellevue Rotary Club’s committee structure will ensure that the club will work effectively to accomplish its goals for the year.

If you haven't yet returned the email with your committee choices marked by committee NUMBER, rather than name, please do so as soon as possible to either Laurie Larson or me.

If you wish to serve on more than one committee, and we hope you will, please feel free to make that notation. Please keep in mind that Bellevue Rotary Club Bylaws discourage members from serving on the same committee for more than 3 consecutive years.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Camp Goodtimes, June 28
Charlotte Ellis
Bulletin ImageThe Rotary Carnival at Camp Goodtimes is the highlight of the summer for area children with cancer and their siblings who attend camp. Bellevue Rotarians and their guests make this day possible.

This year, our theme is The Circus, and we hope everyone will get makeovers from our Gene Juarez stylists, back for the 10th year.

Camp is held on Vashon Island; take the Fauntleroy Ferry. Come mid-morning and plan on spending the day. You will have as much fun as the kids! We have lunch at camp with the campers and stop for pizza and beverages at Rock Island Pizza before heading for the 6:00 pm ferry back to Seattle. Look for more information and sign-up sheets in May.

Presidential Membership Conference
Chris Offer, PDG & Chair, Presidential Membership Conference

Rotary International President (2007-08) Wilf Wilkinson invites clubs, districts, and Rotarians to a Presidential Membership Conference in Vancouver, BC (Richmond) on Friday and Saturday, August 10-11, 2007.

Rotarians from Canada, USA and international delegates will attend this outstanding event. This conference is one of only seven Presidential Membership Conference being held by RIP Wilf Wilkinson. Targeted to Rotary clubs, this conference will focus on the need for change and practical ways to increase membership, retain existing members, and extend Rotary through new clubs.

Keynote speakers will include RI President Wilf Wilkinson, Past RIBI President John Hockin (from the UK) and an exceptional line up of speakers with experience in membership development. Speakers will include a non-Rotarian exploring changing community demographics and volunteering trends. The conference will feature interactive roundtable discussion opportunities to exchange ideas and best practices.

Who should attend?

  • Club membership committee chairs and members

  • Club presidents and club officers

  • District membership committee chairs and members

  • District Governor, DGE, DGN, AG and past officers

  • All Rotarians enthused about strengthening Rotary

Conference details, agenda, list of speakers, hotel information and registration are all available at www.RotaryEvents.ca. Preferential hotel room rates are available and for those areas served by WestJet there are discount flights available.

Many clubs see this conference as an investment in their club's future and are paying the registration and expenses of the club president and club membership chair. A net increase in the club's membership will recoup these costs.

I hope to see you in August at the Presidential Membership Conference.
