At Alaska Airlines, Ayer leads the nation’s ninth-largest airline, with 10,000 employees, 58 destinations and more than 110 aircraft.

A veteran of more than 25 years in aviation, Ayer began his career with Alaska in 1995 as vice president of marketing and planning. Since then, he has held the posts of senior vice president of customer service, marketing and planning; president; and chief operating officer. In 2002, he became the carrier's chief executive officer; and, in May 2003, he was appointed chairman.

Prior to his tenure with Alaska, Ayer spent 13 years at Horizon Air, where he held a variety of marketing and operations positions of increasing responsibility. Immediately prior to joining Alaska, he was Horizon's senior vice president of operations.

Before joining Horizon, Ayer founded and was president of Air Olympia, a commuter airline serving Washington state. He also served as a regional manager for Piper Aircraft Co.

Ayer is a member of the board of directors of Puget Energy, the Museum of Flight and Angel Flight America. He also serves on the University of Washington Business School Advisory Board.

A graduate of Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Ayer also earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Washington. He holds commercial and flight instructor pilot certificates with instrument and multi-engine ratings.

A resident of Bellevue, Ayer is married and has one child. He uses his private pilot skills to fly Angel Flight America patients to their medical treatments.

Bulletin ImageHappiness is Silence

Following is a short story written by Rob Rose about sponsorships at the school for the deaf in Nepal. Rob's non-profit organzation, The Rose International Fund for Children, has sponsored children, however they work closely with the Rotaract Club of Patan, who started a website for the school at www.hearnepal.org. They have collected letters from the children and have begun interacting with the children at the school since these projects have begun.

Happiness in Silence …

Captivated eyes watch fingers deftly moving, dancing, running and jumping to describe in Nepali sign language what I’m reading in English to our sponsored students at the Kathmandu School for the Deaf in Nepal. This was a very special moment for my wife Gina and myself, as well as all of the visitors in the room as I read the first letters from our TRIFC sponsors to their children, which were then translated into Nepali sign language by the school’s director, Indira Shrestha. We currently have 15 children sponsored at the school aged 6-15 and for the amazing sum of $150 we are able to pay for the tuition and books for one child!

But really, the monetary element pales in comparison to that moment when a child sees the photograph of their sponsoring family and watches intently for the words from their letter to come to life through the movements of Indira’s hands and fingers. Through no fault of their own these children are cast into a world filled with silence and overwhelming poverty. However, we have the ability to bring help, hope and smiles to these children in need.

Camp Goodtimes, June 28
Charlotte Ellis
The Rotary Carnival at Camp Goodtimes is the highlight of the summer for area children with cancer and their siblings who attend camp. Bellevue Rotarians and their guests make this day possible.

This year, our theme is The Circus, and we hope everyone will get makeovers from our Gene Juarez stylists, back for the 10th year.

Camp is held on Vashon Island; take the Fauntleroy Ferry. Come mid-morning and plan on spending the day. You will have as much fun as the kids! We have lunch at camp with the campers and stop for pizza and beverages at Rock Island Pizza before heading for the 6:00 pm ferry back to Seattle. Look for more information and sign-up sheets in May.

Presidential Membership Conference
Chris Offer, PDG & Chair, Presidential Membership Conference

Rotary International President (2007-08) Wilf Wilkinson invites clubs, districts, and Rotarians to a Presidential Membership Conference in Vancouver, BC (Richmond) on Friday and Saturday, August 10-11, 2007.

Rotarians from Canada, USA and international delegates will attend this outstanding event. This conference is one of only seven Presidential Membership Conference being held by RIP Wilf Wilkinson. Targeted to Rotary clubs, this conference will focus on the need for change and practical ways to increase membership, retain existing members, and extend Rotary through new clubs.

Keynote speakers will include RI President Wilf Wilkinson, Past RIBI President John Hockin (from the UK) and an exceptional line up of speakers with experience in membership development. Speakers will include a non-Rotarian exploring changing community demographics and volunteering trends. The conference will feature interactive roundtable discussion opportunities to exchange ideas and best practices.

Who should attend?

  • Club membership committee chairs and members

  • Club presidents and club officers

  • District membership committee chairs and members

  • District Governor, DGE, DGN, AG and past officers

  • All Rotarians enthused about strengthening Rotary

Conference details, agenda, list of speakers, hotel information and registration are all available at www.RotaryEvents.ca. Preferential hotel room rates are available and for those areas served by WestJet there are discount flights available.

Many clubs see this conference as an investment in their club's future and are paying the registration and expenses of the club president and club membership chair. A net increase in the club's membership will recoup these costs.

I hope to see you in August at the Presidential Membership Conference.
