Be a Part of the Highly Successful Bellevue Rotary Mentor Team!
Katherine Thompson

Six Rotary mentors are needed for Spring quarter classes beginning April 11. Contact (Ph 425-455-2555) for information about this terrific hands-on Rotary project.

The 'mentee' businesses apply through the Bellevue Entrepreneur Center. They are carefully screened to ensure that they have a project that is appropriate for the student team to work. Each student team of 5 or 6 is paired with two Rotary mentors and one business. The consulting project must have some 'deliverable' and the students make a presentation to the class at the end of the quarter. The Rotary mentor's role is to provide a 'real world' perspective and to keep the students focused on an achievable product. The tendency is to try to take on too much for a quarter long project.

The following businesses have been selected for participation Spring quarter:

  • A fish processing company

  • A start-up Mexican design objects (for unterior design) firm

  • A software company for restaurants to maintain e-commerce website

  • An adult day care

You do not need to have specific experience the business mentored. Your general business acumen and real world perspective will be invaluable to the students as they design and implement a ‘deliverable’ for the client business.

Thank you for participating in this terrific vocational service project. Our partnership with BCC is in it’s 3rd year and gets great reviews from BCC faculty, area businesses, the students and participating Rotarians.

Nepal ‘Differently-Abled’ Project Discussed By District 5030 & 5050 Officials

Bulletin ImageBellevue Rotarian Robert Rose visited the Rotary Club of Mt. Baker in Lynden, Washington, on March 27, to present his program geared to helping people with disabilities in Nepal. Accompanying him on his journey was District Governor Elect Don Gregory, who met with District 5050 Governor Rod Thomson and 5050 DGE John Bosch to talk over providing some assistance to Rob’s efforts.

Rotary District 5050 has a definite international flavor, as it includes both northwestern Washington and southern B.C.! This was Rob’s second visit to speak to RC Mt. Baker at the request of club member Jim Sinclair, who was instrumental in putting together Rotary funding for the Nepal Orthopedic Hospital almost 10 years ago. Over 100 Rotary Clubs participated in Jim’s hospital project, and he personally visited over 75 clubs to promote the project.

They are a welcoming bunch up at Mt. Baker and do great work through Rotary! Their club president, Frank Mansfield, and elder-statesman, Eldon Wiggs (PDG 5020 1989-1990), keep the meeting flowing with grace and humor. If you ever get a chance, be sure to visit Mt. Baker Rotary for lunch on a Tuesday sometime!

Paul Harris Fellowships for BRC Members

The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The Fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution of US$1,000 to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding.

Foundation programs provide educational opportunities, food, portable water, health care, immunizations and shelter for millions of people. These activities are funded, implemented, and managed by Rotarians and Rotary Clubs around the globe.

Rotarians also designate a Paul Harris Fellow to recognize another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. As we move closer to a more peaceful world, we congratulate all of our Paul Harris Fellows.

Groundbreaking for La Primera Piedra

La Primera Piedra, the recipient of a 2006-2007 World Community Service Grant in the amount of $750 from Bellevue Rotary Foundation, is having a groundbreaking ceremony for their new primary school. The following email was received regarding this exciting event:

Dear Friends of the Kids,

You are cordially invited to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new primary school for the children of Nueva Creacion.

Tuesday Morning, April 3rd, at 8:30am, Presidente Silvano Blanco deAquino will place "The First Stone" for the foundation. I suspect that, after four hard years of work and anticipation, this will be an emotional moment for all of us.

The foundations have been dug; the first truckload of city-donated materials has arrived; and workers are busy bending re-bar into shape for the concrete support columns. The three classrooms, two bathrooms and office are expected to be ready for the new 2007/2008 school year which begins in August.

On behalf of the children, I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude to all the volunteers of Los Ninos, Por Los Ninos de Zihuatanejo, International Rotary Clubs and the community of Zihuatanejo. Your dedicated efforts are bearing the most delightful fruit.

Should you need directions to the new school site, please call me on my cell phone, 755-102-4463.

See you Tuesday,
Lorenzo

BCC Rotaract Club Solicits Support
Sergey Smirnov, President-Elect, BCC Rotaract Club
Bulletin ImageBulletin ImageThe BCC Rotaract Club is hosting a table of 10 at the BCC Foundation Luncheon on Wednesday, April 25th. We would like to have the Bellevue Rotary to help fill this table. Surely, a number of the Rotary Club members are already planning to attend this luncheon and might consider sitting with the Rotaractors. Suggested donations start at $150 (a significant portion of which goes directly to BCC Rotaract) and any donation on top of that amount will benefit Rotaract in full. If all 10 seats are filled, an additional table will become available!

If you have any questions or would like to participate in the luncheon with the BCC Rotaract Club, please contact

Camp Goodtimes, June 28
Charlotte Ellis
The Rotary Carnival at Camp Goodtimes is the highlight of the summer for area children with cancer and their siblings who attend camp. Bellevue Rotarians and their guests make this day possible.

This year, our theme is The Circus, and we hope everyone will get makeovers from our Gene Juarez stylists, back for the 10th year.

Camp is held on Vashon Island; take the Fauntleroy Ferry. Come mid-morning and plan on spending the day. You will have as much fun as the kids! We have lunch at camp with the campers and stop for pizza and beverages at Rock Island Pizza before heading for the 6:00 pm ferry back to Seattle. Look for more information and sign-up sheets in May.
