"Bellevue's Salmon, Streams, and Volunteers"

HaigwoodLaurie Devereaux is the Stream Team Program Administrator for the City of Bellevue Utilities Department. She runs the volunteer programs that provides information, increases community involvement and awareness, and initiates changes that will protect the quality of our water systems and fish and wildlife habitat. Laurie trains and works with volunteers on a variety of projects from basic streamside planting to more detailed habitat data collection. She is often in local classrooms teaching students about salmon, streams, and preventing nonpoint pollution. Stream Team was developed officially in 1988 although Citizens have been working with the city to protect habitat since the 1970s.

Laurie has worked for the City of Bellevue almost four years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Education and Interpretation from Huxley College at Western Washington University. Previously she taught conservation for Puget Sound Energy. Laurie has also been a seasonal ranger at the Presidio National Park, Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Acadia National Park, and Glacier National Park.

Annual Ski Fellowship At Crystal
(BRC Members & Exchange Students Only)

Scott East

The time for this perennial favorite event set in our own nearby winter wonderland is growing near: Tuesday evening and Wednesday, March 7 & 8.

SkierSeveral members have expressed an interest, but have not confirmed. If you are planning to go, and are not on my list of confirmations below, please let me know by email. Of the fifteen who have confirmed over the last couple of months, if plans have changed for any of you on the list below, please let me know of that as well. Although email works best for confirmations, I am happy to receive confirmations and questions either by phone/voice mail (425.454.3006), as well as by email.

The level of skiers, boarders, cross country skiers, snow shoers, and card players typically attending ranges from novice to expert, and some who may not leave the lodge unless the sun is shining on fresh powder, i.e., those spoiled by Sun Valley. So everyone will have a group to fit into between group meals on Wednesday. If you're not charging to the slopes, you'll be able to settle by the fire place after your morning stroll, until meeting everyone for lunch at the Snorting Elk. Some will return home then, if not shortly after breakfast, while others will stay the day. Spa/Massage facilities are also available at the resort.

Since the last posting, Frank Young has offered once again to provide vouchers for ski lift tickets, for those who do not have season passes. Alan Fulp and Ron Porborsky have volunteered to be our Wednesday morning breakfast chefs this year, and have presented the following scrumptious menu to augment the milk, orange juice and coffee standards:

Baked Frittata (final recipe still in refinement)
Banana Crunch-top Muffins
Fresh Fruit with Honey Vanilla Yogurt
Bloody Marys

The dinner menu has yet to be determined. We are still expecting the event charge to be between $50 and $60, which includes lodging, Tuesday dinner, and Wednesday breakfast, a bargain considering Frank's offer of lift vouchers. (The exchange students and lodge host will be our guests.) If you're lucky at the games, you may win some back.

There is still plenty of room in both the men's and women's floors of this comfortable Enumclaw Ski Club lodge (bathrooms on all three floors) located at the ski area. All winter sport enthusiasts, card players, lodge-library-only aficionados, and anyone who enjoys super social events, are encouraged to sign up while space remains. That will give our gourmet chefs a nose count, and will let us start planning the car pool assignments. I look forward to hearing from all interest parties without further dithering abou... um, I mean soon.
