THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
Mimi Gardner Gates, Seattle Art Museum "Seattle Art Museum Expansion Plans" Mimi Gardner Gates joined the Seattle Art Museum as director in May 1994. A scholar of Asian Art with a strong interest in Chinese painting, ceramics and the history of ornament, she had formerly served as director of the Yale University Art Gallery.
Gates received her B.A. in Asian history from Stanford University; an Honors diploma in Chinese Language and Culture from the École Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes, Paris; an M.A. in Oriental and Chinese studies from the University of Iowa; and a PhD. in Art History from Yale University.
She began her tenure at Yale University Art Gallery in 1975, serving as Curator of Asian art through 1987 and as director from 1987 to 1994. Under Gates’ direction, Yale’s art gallery created a conservation studio, added a department of European and Contemporary art, expanded its collections and embarked on an ambitious program of exhibitions, many of which were organized by faculty and students. While at Yale, Gates also taught courses in Chinese art history and museum studies.
At Yale, Gates helped organize numerous Chinese Art exhibitions, and contributed to several publications including Bones of Jade, Soul of Ice: The Flowering Plum in Chinese Art (1985)and The Jade Studio. For the China Institute, New York, she organized The Communion of Scholars: Chinese Art at Yale (1981).
At the Seattle Art Museum Gates co-curated the exhibition and co-authored the accompanying publication Porcelain Stories, From China to Europe (2000), and worked with then-curator Jay Xu to organize the groundbreaking exhibition Ancient Sichuan: Treasures from a Lost Civilization (2001).
During her tenure at SAM, Gates has led the museum forward, organizing major exhibitions, publishing scholarly publications, and embarking on significant capital projects, including the establishment of a conservation studio, renovations to the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park, creation of the Olympic Sculpture Park and an expansion of the downtown museum that will eventually triple its size.
Gates has served as president and trustee of the Association of Art Museum Directors, chaired the Federal Indemnity panel (1999–2002) at The National Endowment for the Arts, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Getty Leadership Institute and the Governing Board of the Yale University Art Gallery. In addition, she serves as a Board member for the Northwest African American Museum, the Greater Seattle YWCA, Downtown Seattle Association and Copper Canyon Press. Gates is an affiliate faculty member at the University of Washington.

BRC Makes an Impact Close to Home Club Administrator Laurie Larson recently received this email from BRC Auction Coordinator Sue Albrecht regarding Providence Marianwood, offering a glimpse at how the club’s fundraising efforts have come full circle! Sue is instrumental in the success of the BRC auction, and to have her family directly benefit has wonderful symmetry!
I am very grateful for all the Rotary Club of Bellevue has done for Providence Marianwood, Issaquah. Please share this with the members, as my mother is currently receiving wonderful care at this facility.
In 2005, Providence Marianwood was the beneficiary for the Rotary Club of Bellevue's Annual Auction.
My mother recently had back surgery (01/07) and has since contracted a very serious infection. Valley Medical Hospital required us to place my mother in short term transitional housing. My father and I interviewed several facilities and I then remembered Providence Marianwood in Issaquah.
This facility is currently accommodating my mom; she is receiving very good care there.

Bellevue Rotary Forest Explorers Program
Lake Hills Elementary 2nd Graders Peter Wang, Chairman, Community Grants Committee
Four classes of the 2nd Graders from Lake Hills Elementary School, BSD, attended the Forest Explorers program at the Woodland Park Zoo this fall, courtesy of Bellevue Rotary Community Grants. The Forest Explorers program presents the students an opportunity to experience first-hand the differences between tropic and temperate rain forests and the effect that they have on our environment.
The students and teachers from these classes have expressed their appreciation by sending us 79 original masterpieces of thank-you pictures and drawings. These wonderfully drawn thank you pictures are being displayed with Club Administrator for all to enjoy.
Here are some of the many wonderful comments from Mrs. McClanahan, Ms. Okawa, Ms. Tzucker’s classes and the fabulous writers of Room 111:
Amazing hands-on experience …
Amazing hands-on experience …
My favorite is a gorilla because the gorilla was picking it’s nose.
I saw a funny looking squirrel, a jaguar and a fat white owl …
I learned about the temperate rain fores t…
The live jaguar — that is our school mascot.
We learned the four layers of the forest …
Amazing … so cool … thank you …
Really appreciated that you let us go …
Great learning experience and appreciate your wonderful gift to us!
It was a real live jaguar! I love zoos.
And the penguins and peacock too.
I learned that the forest floor has bugs that eat the leaves and poop the soil out.
I love going to the zoo. I never been to zoo.
The bats make me scream, I jumped …
I learned about the monkeys, the ones with the beards.
