THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Lorraine McConaghy, Historian
Museum of History & Industry

Bulletin ImageLorraine McConaghy is the historian at the Museum of History and Industry, in Seattle. She completed her doctorate in United States urban history at the University of Washington in 1993 and has published and taught Pacific Northwest history ever since. Her "Raise Hell and Sell Newspapers," with Sherry Boswell, is a biography of Washington State's most powerful publisher, Alden Blethen, and "The Seattle Times Centennial Series" is a reprint of historical articles published in the newspaper that explore the city's history from 1896 to the present. In 1999, Lorraine received the Charles Gates Research Award for her article in Pacific Northwest Quarterly, "Cold War Pulitzer Prize: The Albert Canwell Committee Hearings."

Lorraine has taught at the University of Washington and joined the museum's staff in 1997. As museum historian, her primary responsibilities involve research and writing, but she continues to teach through a variety of museum programs and at the University of Washington. She is interested in local and family history, and teaches with Sarah Little in the University of Washington's Genealogy and Family History program.

Lorrraine is the executive editor of a forthcoming interpretive on-line anthology of the historical collections of Seattle and King County: structures, oral histories, artifacts, photographs, maps, diaries and correspondence. She is also working on a book and a series of articles, based on her research on the Pacific Squadron cruise of the U.S. Sloop-of-War DECATUR, 1854-1859. In 2005, Lorraine received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching History, the DAR National Heritage Medal, the AKCHO Charles Payton Award, and a research fellowship from the U.S. Naval History Center. In 2006, she received the Annual History Award, from the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild.

Bellevue Rotary Forest Explorers Program
Lake Hills Elementary 2nd Graders

Peter Wang, Chairman, Community Grants Committee

Four classes of the 2nd Graders from Lake Hills Elementary School, BSD, attended the Forest Explorers program at the Woodland Park Zoo this fall, courtesy of Bellevue Rotary Community Grants. The Forest Explorers program presents the students an opportunity to experience first-hand the differences between tropic and temperate rain forests and the effect that they have on our environment.

The students and teachers from these classes have expressed their appreciation by sending us 79 original masterpieces of thank-you pictures and drawings. These wonderfully drawn thank you pictures are being displayed with Club Administrator for all to enjoy.

Here are some of the many wonderful comments from Mrs. McClanahan, Ms. Okawa, Ms. Tzucker’s classes and the fabulous writers of Room 111:

Amazing hands-on experience …

My favorite is a gorilla because the gorilla was picking it’s nose.

I saw a funny looking squirrel, a jaguar and a fat white owl …

I learned about the temperate rain fores t…

The live jaguar — that is our school mascot.

We learned the four layers of the forest …

Amazing … so cool … thank you …

Really appreciated that you let us go …

Great learning experience and appreciate your wonderful gift to us!

It was a real live jaguar! I love zoos.

And the penguins and peacock too.

I learned that the forest floor has bugs that eat the leaves and poop the soil out.

I love going to the zoo. I never been to zoo.

The bats make me scream, I jumped …

I learned about the monkeys, the ones with the beards.
