Sun Valley Report
Scott East

Wednesday:
Well, we might take a car, we might take a plane, we might take a train (Really? Naaa ...), but we'll get there all the same, goin' to ski Sun Valley ...

Late afternoon departure via Horizon, then rental car from Boise for two of us: Mike Creighton checking into Debbie Acton and Frank's place adjacent to Warm Springs lift, and me into Janine and Alex Florence's townhouse next door, both of which were most elegant, on and looking across Warm Springs Creek at unrestricted view of the ski slopes.  All the hosts, except for Steve Anderson, had arrived earlier and been able to ski in fresh powder this day.

Thursday:

Quote2Debbie, Janine, Mike and I visited almost all the lifts and runs, both bowls and groomed, and skied to end of day in sunshine, powder from day before having held nicely.  Lots of fast skiing on the groomed runs: Debbie, having taught her brother, a former USA ski team member, all he knew; Janine not only getting impressive vertical annually, here and abroad, but also having passed the Bump Masters concentrated training program last winter; past ski instructor/professional ski patroller, Mike, showing he had forgotten nothing; and me praying hard that I wouldn't crash, then get yelled at by the team of orthopedists who have repaired shoulders, leg bones, and installed new hips over the last few years (but more work to be done ... anybody know a good knees pod? What, you say, "shrink"?).

Former instructor Chuck Doland and Joyce, driving from Seattle, arrived at Larry and Carol Mast's in the afternoon (also located right on Warm Springs Creek) and the Masts hosted a wine and snacks after-ski party.  Their home is spacious and comfortable, unique architecture, with wine cellar filled with very special selections. Charming Carol loves to cook, and her kitchen can obviously handle any menu she decides to take on (note testimonial:  Larry's exercise equipment). Larry also had an impressive array of old single malts (my passion) and some special tequilas that opened my eyes to the subtleties of these spirits, a far cry from the throat searing worm killers of my more youthful drinking days.

Larry made reservations at the old and famous Ranch Restaurant, where we were joined by Steve Anderson, Rondi Bennett, and Brad Hunt, all just arriving on the drive from Boise. Another friend of Larry's also joined us, John Anderson, an OB from Atherton who was working with Larry organizing the NW Medical Association meeting (Big write-off party for the skiing docs?) taking place next week. John was a lot of fun, fitting right into the exuberant group, and the Ranch food showed off an experienced kitchen.

Friday.

skis2Sunshine and skiing encore, with just enough fresh powder falling overnight that, together with the windblown snow, filled in the bumps in the bowls and made them even more fun. Steve Anderson showed what 25 days on the boards this season, plus his already strong skills, could do to a powdery bowl.  It was fast, fall line skiing that had the rest of the off-piste group gasping for air.  We toggled between the bowls and fast runs on the groomed with the more sane members of the group, Joyce, Rondi, and Brad (all skiing very well, albeit it took all of Brad's natural athletic ability to make up for his average of less than one ski day per season, and to allow him to hang in with the polished techniques of Joyce and Rondi). Former Rotarian, Pat Dineen, and his daughter, Bridgette, joined us for some runs together, while mom sat with her one-year old.  Then, Bridgette broke off with the Bowls Brigade for a couple of runs and acquitted the family's ski reputation very well on the steep and deep (but no surprise, what with her youth and "skiing a lot with a former boyfriend who raced in college.)"

Debbie and husband, Frank, hosted an after-ski party for those just off the slopes, which proved to be a warm and welcome break for those who got all the vertical they wanted an hour before the lifts closed (quiet, good guy Frank, new to skiing, but with his legs/knees-required background in soccer, will undoubtedly be leading the pack before long). Then, off to the Jacuzzi tubs to prep for the next event (no rest for the wicked...ly delightful).

Frank and Susan got their runs in early in the day, so were the most refreshed of all that evening, welcoming us at their impressive wine, cheese, nuts, and fruit reception at the posh and historic Knob Hill Inn. This was no ordinary pre-dinner event, but more of a fine wine tasting, featuring special selections, the least of which were a couple of Leonettis, joined by California and French wines.  The Youngs also had other friends that they see each year at the Inn join us and introduced all to the owners. (Note to committee: Make Frank bring gracious and entertaining Susan to more socials.) The Rotarians and spouses group numbered 15, plus the other guests, making for conversations enriched by the non-skiing spouses (did I mention that Alex Florence is particularly fond of and familiar with Burgundies and does the occasional blind tastings?).

And the tour of luxury accommodations continued. I joined the Masts on the way to dinner for a stop at the Sun Valley Lodge (speaking of posh places), where he and John Atherton were tasting wines for the NW Med Association's dinner to take place there next week. They had narrowed the selection to two fine wines, a California cab and a Bordeaux, so we got to sip along while chatting with the manager and wife about the wines, as well as his homeland (from Nice, and his wife from Bordeaux). A fine program is being designed by Larry and John, so the skiing docs are in for a fun time next week (especially those who don't count calories or monitor liver enzymes).

Half of the group joined the Youngs at Rosina's Restaurant (upscale Italian). The other half took Chinese take out for a tour of Steve Anderson's modest abode in Elkhorn (7500 square feet, reported to be like a lodge-on-mountain, in no small part due to the architect having designed lodges on Baldy). A very good time was reported by both groups.

Saturday/Sunday:

Steve was planning to host a Super Bowl party, but that would not have interfered with the ski day. Mike and I had to return on Saturday, so must leave it to the others to report on the sun and fun weekend.

Conclusion (Finally?  I heard that!):

"Ski Trip" obviously understates all this event had to offer, which seems promising for a repeat, if the hosts can stand so much intrusion into their relaxed winter vacations. Whether one is most attracted to the immaculately groomed slopes, light powdery bowls, fine wines, dining, shopping, camaraderie, or all the above, this location is perfect for a fellowship event that both skiers and resort aficionados can enjoy with other Rotarians, their spouses, and other friends there on their own.

Thanks to all hosts and guests for a memorable event!  Same time next year?
