THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Aaron Adelstein
Executive Director, Built Green
"Green Building: The New Bragging Rights"

Bulletin ImageAaron Adelstein is the Executive Director of the Built Green program of King and Snohomish Counties, a certifier of environmentally friendly single family homes, multi-family units, remodels and developments. Built Green is one of the most successful green building certification programs in the U.S. with more than 200 member builders, 420 member companies and 10,000 projects certified.

It is the fastest growing segment of the building industry and what a recent Newsweek cover called "The Greening of America," a phomenon reaching every corner of the nation. The housing bragging rights of the nineties were characterized by house size, number of garages, and entertainment facilities. With our new collective environmental conscience, the american consumer of today is talking about energy efficiency, recycled products and green roofs. Aaron will talk about a selection of green building projects in our area, and show you why they defy the stereotypes of "green."

Aaron has a masters in environmental policy from the University of Montana, where he specialized in environmental advocacy strategies and trends in the Green Building Movement. He is currently active on the executive committee of the Snohomish County Sustainable Development Task Force, is a member of the Seattle Community College Real Estate Technical Advisory Council, and is a member of the Puget Sound Clean Home Heating Partnership.

Nepal Projects - Check Out the Blog!
Rob Rose

Gina and I have left for Nepal and another exciting trip of fulfilling projects and fun! This year, you can keep in touch with us during our trip (February 3-26), and see what’s going on through our “blog,” a web-log, which is somewhat like a travel diary but has many more features. We can update the blog during the trip, sending short stories, photos, audio clips (podcasts), video clips and more! All you have to do is click on the link at right that says TRIFC BLOG, and you will be taken right to the blog on the website.

To complicate matters, I also have a Rotary Trip Blog to highlight the progress of a fantastic Rotary project I’ve been working on for the past two years. This project will partner all 70 Rotary Clubs in Nepal with Rotary Clubs in our district to help people with disabilities throughout Nepal. If you are interested in checking that out, click on the link at right that says ROTARY TRIP BLOG, and you will be taken to the blog on the website.

When you visit the websites, you will see an RSS Subscribe button. If you click on that, you’ll receive email notices whenever the site is updated during the trip. It’s very cool! You can write comments to us from the blog which we can see while we’re in Nepal, so we’re really looking forward to hearing from you!

Bellevue Rotary Forest Explorers Program
Lake Hills Elementary 2nd Graders

Peter Wang, Chairman, Community Grants Committee

Four classes of the 2nd Graders from Lake Hills Elementary School, BSD, attended the Forest Explorers program at the Woodland Park Zoo this fall, courtesy of Bellevue Rotary Community Grants. The Forest Explorers program presents the students an opportunity to experience first-hand the differences between tropic and temperate rain forests and the effect that they have on our environment.

The students and teachers from these classes have expressed their appreciation by sending us 79 original masterpieces of thank-you pictures and drawings. These wonderfully drawn thank you pictures are being displayed with Club Administrator for all to enjoy.

Here are some of the many wonderful comments from Mrs. McClanahan, Ms. Okawa, Ms. Tzucker’s classes and the fabulous writers of Room 111:

Amazing hands-on experience …

My favorite is a gorilla because the gorilla was picking it’s nose.

I saw a funny looking squirrel, a jaguar and a fat white owl …

I learned about the temperate rain fores t…

The live jaguar — that is our school mascot.

We learned the four layers of the forest …

Amazing … so cool … thank you …

Really appreciated that you let us go …

Great learning experience and appreciate your wonderful gift to us!

It was a real live jaguar! I love zoos.

And the penguins and peacock too.

I learned that the forest floor has bugs that eat the leaves and poop the soil out.

I love going to the zoo. I never been to zoo.

The bats make me scream, I jumped …

I learned about the monkeys, the ones with the beards.
