Carol Binder, Executive Director Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority (PDA) and Marlys Erickson, Executive Director Market Foundation “Pike Place Market at 100" The Pike Place Market celebrated its 100th anniversary on August 17, 2007. Why does it exist? How has it changed? What is its significance nationally? What are the plans for the next decade? Carol Binder
As Executive Director of the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA), Carol Binder works to preserve and maintain the cultural identity of that historic institution. She oversees nearly 100 PDA employees who run the Market’s maintenance, security, custodial, leasing, housing, daystall, farm and administrative programs. Carol has a long history with Pike Place Market, beginning with her eight-year term on the Pike Place Market’s governing Council in the 1990’s, serving as Interim Executive Director in 1999 and returning to the position permanently in 2003. In her tenure thus far, she has overseen the construction of a new, low-income senior housing/senior center building and the Market’s Centennial bash in 2007. Currently the Market is engaged in planning for a major Market renovation, focusing on preserving the buildings, but improving their functionality and sustainability. Marlys Erickson
Since 1991, Marlys Erickson has been the Market Foundation’s Executive Director. During her tenure, the Foundation has conducted a $3.1 million capital campaign for historic building repairs, secured funding for a 64-unit, $16 million low-income housing project, built a mini-museum (the Market Heritage Center), and conducted two bouts of Pigs on Parade, a public art exhibition which featured 170 artist-adorned fiberglass pigs in 2001. Pigs on Parade 2007 featured 100 pigs and funded the Market’s 6-month long Centennial celebration.Katherine Thompson

It was a treat to hear from many of you over the Holidays. Derick and I send warm greetings and hearty wishes for all the best in your lives during the New Year. Rotary, as a club, has been a fine partner with Prosperity Rings' endeavors in the past. Derick and I personally love to give of our good fortune and imagine you do, too. We would like to encourage you to take this opportunity to see what donor funds have accomplished AND to become individual supporters of our family-originated, registered 501©(3) non-profit microcredit foundation, Prosperity Rings. • We grant funds to be loaned to acutely poor women in India so that each one is able to establish her small income generating enterprise. • A micro loan with low interest to these women means that she and her children need not work as indentured (slave) laborers for a pittance, that they can get medical care without going into debt, that they can eat! • Derick and I gladly pay for all administrative expenses so that all of our donors funds go directly toward loans. • Donors gifts are not one-time; they are used over and over as they revolve (are repaid), and even grow when the interest borrowers pay is added to the amount. • We travel to India to meet our borrowers personally, visit their enterprises, and hear about their before-loan and after-loan cases. • Our onsite partners, whom we interview and select carefully, are small micro credit organizations who need seed funds to expand their services. We hope you will take the time to read the Prosperity Rings Annual Report and will then be inspired to invest your support in the lives of our borrowers, whom we personally know and visit. Checks may be sent to Prosperity Rings, P.O. 70220, Seattle, WA 98127 or P.O. Box 505018, Dubai, UAE or via credit card (Paypal) on the website. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
