NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM:

Lynette Huffman Johnson, Photographer
"Illuminating Loss: The Soulumination Mission"

Ms. Johnson specializes in photos of children who are suffering from life threatening illness. Her story was presented on the Today Show and in People Magazine last fall.

x0131JohnsonBorn in 1955 in Seattle, Washington, to Neal and Gerry Huffman, Lynette Huffman Johnson was raised on a farm on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, near the town of Sequim. After marrying Doug Johnson and moving first to Port Townsend, Washington, then to Seattle, Johnson devoted herself to raising her two daughters, McKenzie and Lewellyn. Her development into a professional photographer began with her documentation of her daughters’ lives and grew by stages into a celebrated career. Johnson began selling her work in 1987, and is now a well-known photographer whose client list includes Bill and Melinda Gates, among other Seattle luminaries.

Years ago, after watching a sister-in-law and a close friend lose little babies, Johnson began quietly donating portraits of terminally ill children to their families, as a way of honoring the children, helping the parents grieve, and enlightening the rest of the world about the plight of families who have lost children to illness. Her portraits are profoundly moving tributes to the children she photographs, a celebration of their lives, and have proven a godsend to their mothers and fathers.

In 2005, after a spate of publicity brought attention to this work, and along with it heightened demand from all over the country, Johnson set up Soulumination, a foundation dedicated to providing such portraits and memories to any family who wants them.

x0131BelizeHumanitarian Trip To Belize
Peter Kalunian

For the sixth year in a row, a missionary trip was made to Belize.

The medical team, hosted in Dangriga (110 miles South of Belize City and on the Caribbean, provided free medical services at Southern Regional hospital to residents.  Members of the team also conducted diabetic and self-breast examination clinics. One thousand dollars' worth of medicine was provided by the Bellevue Rotary Club.  Many surgeries and outpatient examinations were conducted.

The medical team ate at local restaurants for breakfast and dinner and lunch was provided at the hospital (rice, beans and chicken every day).

All team members enjoyed at least one pleasure day. Some visited Mayan ruins; others went snorkeling at a off-shore island caye (pronounced key); and others went tubing down a river. The weather was cool — in the 70's — and cloudy, very pleasant for us, but cold for the local residents. Plans are being made for a return t rip next year.

The construction team repaired windows at the local elementary school in Dangriga. The school is housed right on the Caribbean Sea and the metal windows sea side have become inoperative due to corrosion. We replaced the windows with wooden shutter type windows.  The students now have a breeze, light, and a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. Bellevue Rotary Club provided $1,000 for building materials.

Members of the team also attended a Rotary meeting in Dangriga. The club is less than a year old and already has identified matching grant projects.

We received as much (if not more) from the local residents than they received from us. Belizeans are very friendly and appreciative people. "Don't worry, be happy" rings a familiar chord and for us type-A Americans, it is refreshing to be able to slow a little and appreciate each other and our planet Earth.

"What you have done to the least of these, you have also done it to me.''

Thank you to the Bellevue Club for your generous contribution. We could not have carried out the projects without your financial contribution.

Airline Miles Needed for Bellevue/Bulgaria Project
Rob Rose

airlinemilesAngel Kelchev, President of the Stanford/PaloAlto Rotaract Club (and previously a member of BCC Rotaract Club), has been a leader incoordinating a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant project with Bellevue Rotary Club to provide computer equipment to a high school in Pazardjik, Bulgaria. Angel is a student at Stanford and would like to lead a team of volunteers from Stanford to travel to Bulgaria next spring to install and network the computers and instruct the Bulgarian students in how to use them. However, the cost for airfare is prohibitive, and the grant will not cover travel costs. Do any Bellevue Rotary Club members have excess travel mileage that they would be willing to donate to Angel to help him with the airline ticket?

Please contact Rob Rose (Ph 425-454-7676) if you would be willing to help.
