Gary Gilger, Chair of the 2008 Bellevue Rotary Auction & Elizabeth Westburg of the YWCA "2008 Auction Kick-Off"
The primary beneficiary of the 2008 Auction will be the YWCA. The partnership between Bellevue Rotary Foundation and the YWCA will benefit our community. The YWCA has a long history of providing essential services to low-income women and families in our region. Currently, they are expanding programs on the Eastside. Funds from the 2008 Bellevue Rotary Auction will benefit the new Eastside Women’s Center in Bellevue, a program serving homeless and low-income women.Eastside Women’s Center is currently located in the fellowship hall of The First Congregational Church. In its first six months, open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 3:00pm, they have already served 70 women. No one is turned away. All are provided food, showers and on-site employment assistance. Staff members conduct one-on-one assessments to determine each individual’s situation and needs. Clients are then connected to community resources, including appropriate housing options. With your support, we can change lives and give hope. Each day, the center is temporarily set up and torn down every evening, as the church uses the space for other programs. Proceeds from Bellevue Rotary Auction will fund capital expenses for the Eastside Women’s Center. The YWCA will create a larger permanent Eastside Women’s Center to meet the needs of women in crisis. Last week, RI President-Elect D.K. Lee announced that his challenge to Rotarians world-wide will be to "reduce the child mortality rate," guided by Rotary's continuing emphasis on water, health and hunger, and literacy. In speaking to incoming district governors at the International Assembly in San Diego, Lee announced that his theme for the year will be "Make Dreams Real."
He said, “Every day, around the world, children die needlessly of pneumonia, measles and malaria. Thousands die every day from the lack of a most basic resource: clean water. And many more die from a combination of factors, in which malnutrition and poverty play major roles. I would like to see reducing the child mortality rate become a key goal of club and district service projects in the year ahead.”He went on to say, “For the last few years, RI’s presidents have chosen to continue a consistent set of service emphases, focusing every year on projects in health and hunger, water and literacy. I plan to keep these three emphases but to ask the entire family of Rotary to make a special effort to focus on projects that will make a difference in the lives of children.” Bellevue Rotary will have a wine tasting event on Friday, January 25th, at 5:30 PM at the Harbor Club in Bellevue. Sign-up sheets will be on the tables for the January 8th, 15th and 22nd meetings. Cost is $30 per person. Call or email Byron Piro for more information (Ph 425-646-4860). The Bellevue Rotary Club recently received a thank you letter from David Bobanick, Executive Director of Rotary First Harvest, which read in part: Thank you so much for your donation of $550.00 to Rotary First Harvest. You have made a significant contribution to the nutritional needs of over one million people in the State of Washington. Thanks to you and other donors, Rotary First Harvest has been able to provide more than 120 million pounds of produce since our founding in 1982. With your continued support, Rotary First Harvest is able to turn millions of pounds of produce that might otherwise go to waste into an effective solution for hunger relief in our region. Thank you again for your generous support. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
