Community Service Opportunitiy Help set up and serve seniors at the North Bellevue Senior Center's annual holiday luncheon on Wednesday, December 15, 2004. Sign up with Doug Whalen. Bell Ringing Schedule Filled! Thank you to all the volunteers who signed up to ring bells for theSalvation Army on the 18th and 19th. The response was so overwhelming that all time slots were filled and remaining volunteers redirected to other opportunities. Kelly Nolan, Captain of the Eastside Corps, and prospective Rotarian, provided me with interesting background on the Army. I share this with you to "put a clearer face" on the institution that we see throughout the year, but which is most visible to us at this time of year. If you have any questions let me know and I'm sure Kelly would be happy to respond. * * *
The Salvation Army began its outreach in King County 106 years ago and established its local operations on the Eastside in 1989. Last year alone, the Eastside Corps helped almost 4,000 individuals (1250 families) with food, shelter and other basic needs. The Red Kettle bell-ringing campaign is our major fund-raiser, providing approximately 40% of our annual funds. Donations received on the Eastside are put to work right here in our own community, not only at Christmas but throughout the year. In September of this year we moved to our new building in the Crossroads neighborhood, and will begin many new programs, including after-school activities for grade-school children, in January." Captain Kelly had previously mentioned that the loss of access to Target stores on the Eastside will cost the Eastside Corps about $30,000 in revenue. This is a significant loss for them, one that will need to be madeup from other sources ....or services will be cut and needs unfulfilled. Something to remember as we individually pass a kettle. -- Captain Kelly Nolan Happy holidays to all and come see us at the Mall on the 18th and 19th.

Vietnam Water Project In coordination with the Care to Help Project, the World Community Service Committee of the Bellevue Rotary Club is sponsoring a water project in a Vietnam village called B'Dor, an ethnic minority village of about 2000 people that currently does not have a source for safe drinking, cooking or bathing water. B'Dor is about 80 miles south of Da Lat, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Care to Help Project Director Scott Mantz will be providing photos and progress reports throughout the duration of this project. Latest News From Scott Mantz ... I am happy to announce that the Bellevue Rotary sponsored well project at B'Co village in Vietnam has been completed and is in operation! The crew completed the project on November 12, and the opening ceremonies were held on November 15. B'Co village is next to B'Dor where we first started drilling, but had no success. The villagers of B'Dor are welcome to come to B'Co to collect clean water, which is a lot easier than walking to where they had been collecting water, not to mention that this is safe water for consumption. Between the two villages, this well will provide safe water to well over 1,000 people. The villagers have asked me to tell the Bellevue Rotary how much they appreciate what you have given them. They thank you very much. This well will make their lives so much easier. Click here to read all the progress reports on this project. |
