x1026Jacks1Pumpkin Auction
Submitted by Wally Costello

We are having the Second Annual Rotary First Harvest Pumpkin Auction at this week's meeting, October 26, to help raise funds to benefit Rotary First Harvest.

This year we plan on having more pumpkins to auction, with the minimum goal of one pumpkin per table

There will be pumpkins provided by the Rotary First Harvest Committee.  President Katherine is even planning on carving a pumpkin, and she suggested this might be a great opportunity for Past Presidents to show how creative they are and to also carve pumpkins for the auction.

Red Badgers could use this as a community service activity.  Members who are very creative and would like to carve pumpkins are welcome to do so.

Bring your pumpkins to the October 26th meeting as close to noon as possible so members can admire your work on display at the tables.

Good Start Back to School Program A Success!
Submitted by Phil Bevan

Your extremely generous $2,000 grant this year was a wonderful help to our 9th annual Good Start Back to School project. Your gift stretched a very long way as we shopped near and far to purchase school supplies and backpacks at excellent sale prices. Thanks to your participation, more low-income kids than ever in the Bellevue public schools  1095 as of September 24  have been helped so far this year by Congregations for Kids.

Of these, 987 students received new backpacks filled with school supplies; the remaining 108 requested school supplies only.  We prepared backpacks and/or supplies for 1252 students this August after seeing the numbers requested in June, comparing them with last year's numbers and then allowing for an increase. This means that an additional 157 filled backpacks are ready for students entering the district later this year. Based on past history, most of those 157 will be given away this school year.  The incredible donations of 26 Bellevue congregations, four service groups and one corporation, and grants from you and another organization, made this all possible. Of those helped this year, 676 are in 15 (out of a total 16) Bellevue elementary schools, 235 in 7 middle schools and 184 in 6 high schools. The students receiving help are those most in need of the almost 2,700 students in Bellevue public schools - 17.8% - who qualify for the Free and Reduced Price Lunch program this year.

Bellevue Rotary & BCC Rotaract Club Team Up To Help Disabled & Orphaned Children in Nepal

x1026NepalRose2aThe BRC's Rob Rose and Peter Kirov have joined together with the BCC Rotaract Club to raise funds to support projects in Nepal. Our World Community Service Committee has approved funds to match the funds raised by the BCC Rotaract Club up to $2,500. These funds will be used to aid disabled children at the Newlife Disabled Center, orphaned children at the Nandu Maya self-sustaining orphan home and children at the School for the Deaf in Kathmandu, Nepal.

If the political situation in Nepal is safe enough, a group of BCC students will travel to Nepal with Rob and Peter, along with their spouses, Gina and Megumi, to undertake hands-on projects at the above mentioned locations. Last year Rob and Gina led a group of adult volunteers and Garfield High School students to Nepal. It was an enriching and rewarding experience for everyone involved, including members of our hosting club, RC Patan. This Nepali club, with whom we have cooperated on numerous projects, is now our officially recognized “twin club."

This $5,000 being raised and the volunteers going over to Nepal can make a meaningful difference in many children’s lives. When world events seem sad and discouraging, it is indeed satisfying to give of ourselves and improve the lives of others.

Please support the Rotaract Club as they raise funds for this worthy project. When we reach out and connect with the Rotaract club we chartered, we strengthen our relationship as parent club and mentors for future Rotarians.

BCC Rotaract Club Car Wash Nets
Big Bucks on Dreary Day
by star Cub Reporter Rob Rose

On Saturday, October 16th, the BCC Rotaract Club had their first fundraiser to support humanitarian projects in Nepal. The day started out dark and rainy; however, the BCC student’s spirits weren’t at all dampened. Plus, the cars came in "presoaked"!

Within a short time, the students were "presoaked" as well. This reporter suggested looking extra-pathetic to bring in more business. By noontime the rain had stopped and business started to pick up. Some kind souls even gave donations instead of having their cars washed!

The five-hour event netted $352.00, so they are well on their way to the $2,500 goal (and pneumonia, I think!)

Special thanks go to Old Bellevue Chevron for hosting the event.
