WEEKLY BULLETIN FEATURED SPEAKERS FOR OCTOBER 19, 2004
Jim Dwyer, Bill Carney, & Bob Walsh JAMES D. DWYER James D. Dwyer is the president and chief executive officer of Washington Dental Service, the largest dental insurance provider in the State of Washington. Dwyer has a significant track record of public and private-sector leadership. Prior to joining Washington Dental Service in February 2002, he served as president and chief operating officer of Sound Floor Coverings, Inc., a privately held distribution company based in Seattle. Dwyer expanded Sound Floor Coverings operations in six states, increased product offerings and sales, and engineered the sale of the company to Canadian interests. Previously, Dwyer was a partner at the former Seattle-based law firm Bogle & Gates, where he served as director of international law. Dwyer had a 16-year career with the Port of Seattle, rising through the ranks to become executive director. The Port of Seattle, a billion-dollar enterprise with more than 1,000 employees, is the largest municipal corporation in the state. Its operations include the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, harbor facilities, and recreational and commercial marinas in the Puget Sound area. In the community, Dwyer has been involved in a variety of activities and currently serves on several boards, including the Board of Trustees at Seattle University where he was formerly chairman of the universitys Board of Regents and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and is chair of the Seattle Organizing Committee for Pacific Rim Sports Summit. He also is a board member of Washington Dental Service, several national Delta Dental organizations and a variety of privately held companies. * * * Bob WalsH Bob Walsh is the Chief Executive Officer of the Seattle Organizing Committee for the 2005 and 2006 Pacific Rim Sports Summit: The Road to Beijing, and President of Bob Walsh Enterprises, Inc. The Road to Beijing will be held in conjunction with the United States Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Committees from the nations of the Pacific Rim with an emphasis on China and will include a major arts festival and health summit. Bob Walsh Enterprises, Inc. (formerly Bob Walsh & Associates) has been in business since 1976. The company has operated a variety of diverse divisions, including national and international event production, vast operations in foreign countries, and the management of entertainment and sports celebrities. Bob Walsh has pioneered many big events. Under Walshs direction, Seattle staged in 1984 what NCAA officials acknowledge as the finest college basketball championship ever held. Since that time, the NCAA has rewarded Walsh and Seattle with eight more Division I basketball tournaments including the 1989 and 1995 Final Four Basketball Championships and the 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1993 West Regional Basketball Championships. Thanks to his efforts, the 1987 NBA All-Star Game-Weekend, two NCAA Womens Final Fours, and two NCAA Division I Soccer Championships have visited the Puget Sound area as well. In additional to the Pacific Rim Sports Summit: The Road to Beijing, BWE also owns the rights to the Air Force Academys home football opener against the University of Washington, September 3, 2005. The game is being moved to Seahawks Stadium in Seattle. BWE is also producing The Greats of the Game in association with the NBA Retired Players Association (NBRPA). Perhaps the largest single event in Seattle since the 1962 Worlds Fair was the 1990 Goodwill Games, which Walsh brought to Seattle. The $250 million dollar event involved nearly 2,500 athletes from fifty countries, was a gigantic artistic and cultural event, and became the largest citizens exchange between the United States and the former Soviet Union. Walshs organization formed a partnership with Turner Broadcasting, Goskomsport and Gosteleradio (Ministers of Sports and Television) in Moscow to produce the Games. As President of the Organizing Committee for the Goodwill Games, Walsh began visiting the former Soviet Union in 1986. Walsh Enterprises initiated and organized a successful bid for an NBA franchise in Vancouver, B.C. Vancouver chose him because of his extensive background with contacts in the National Basketball Association. As the assistant general of the Seattle Supersonics from 1973-1977, he worked with long-time friend and Hall of Famer, Bill Russell. The NBA Commissioner asked Walsh to head a committee to study the third referee concept, which now exists in the league. He also produced pre-season games for NBA teams throughout the United States and Canada. Walsh was instrumental in several major firsts between the former Soviet Union and the United States, including a joint venture space launch from Russia to the United States (1993), a water crossing of the Bering Strait (1987), and the first live broadcast of a U.S. sporting event in the USSR (1989 Final Four). In 1992, Bob Walsh Enterprises, Inc. (BWE) was created to develop business opportunities between the former Soviet Union and US companies. Walshs contacts grew out of the many deep personal and governmental friendships that he established when he began traveling to the Republic of Georgia and Russia in 1986. Walsh Polyvit is now one of the most popular vitamins in the former USSR and BWE is now one of the largest real estate developers in the Republic of Georgia. A Marriott Hotel is currently being built in the center of Tbilisi, Georgia, the result of a Joint Venture with BWE. Because of his humanitarian activities in the former USSR, Walsh received the Supreme Soviet Award in 1988 from then President Mikhail Gorbachev. Only three other Americans have received this prestigious award, including former Presidents Reagan and Bush. Walsh directed a portion of the Armenian earthquake relief effort for the Soviet government. The global humanitarian organization, CARE, credits him for introducing them to the former Soviet Union. After the break-up of the USSR, with the help of President Eduard Shevardnadze, Walsh arranged for the distribution of food and medicine to Georgia. Mr. Walsh has managed a variety of individuals over the past twenty years, including movie producer Stanley Kramer (High Noon, Guess Whos Coming to Dinner, Its a Mad, Mad World), basketball Hall of Famers Bill Russell and Lenny Wilkens, football stars Matt Millen, Jim Zorn and Steve Largent, and Olympic Gold Medalists Tracie Ruiz and Olga Korbut. Mr. Walsh has represented over 100 celebrities. Before moving to Seattle, Walsh was program director at KABC-AM radio in Los Angeles, where he helped pioneer the talk radio format, employing celebrities such as William Shatner, Tom Bradley, Maureen Reagan, Regis Philbin, Mr. Blackwell, Merlin Olson, Bill Russell, and Army Archard. Prior to that, he served as an executive producer at WNAC-TV in Boston, where he produced the Al Capp Show nationally. A graduate of Marietta College (Ohio), Walsh has been honored with many prestigious awards, including: the Abe Lincoln Award from Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission for Top Broadcaster in North America, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, two Associated Press Awards, the Golden Mike Award and the Big M Award for Man of the Year in California, the 1993 Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater, Marietta College, Washington State Man of the Year in 1990, Seattles 1990 Distinguished Marketing Award, the 1986 Seattle Mayors Small Business Award, and the 1990 Friend of Man trophy presented by the Association of Washington Generals. He was also chosen to be the 1990 Washington State Travel Person of the Year, the American Diabetes Man of the Year and was given the 1990 World Citizen Award from the World Affairs Council. In 2002, President Eduard Shevardnadze of the Republic of Georgia presented Walsh with the highest award ever given to a foreigner the Honorary Citizen of Georgia. * * * Bill Carney Bill's event management experience began with the US Army over thirty years ago. In early 1998 the 1999 Special Olympic World Games were in danger of being cancelled. The organizing committee did not have a comprehensive written organizational plan, it lacked experienced event planners and managers, and more importantly, had a $5,000,000 shortfall. The Board of Directors hired a new CEO who, along with his new COO, Bill Carney, began to reconstruct the organizing committee by bringing in experienced event planners and managers and by creating more practical and efficient marketing and operational plans. By the time the 1999 Games were over, they were being called one of the best Special Olympics ever - athlete centered, efficiently managed and more amazingly had over a $2,500,000 surplus. Other events that Mr. Carney has been involved in are: 1991 Pan Am Games - Tampa - Airport Co-coordinator for the USOC 1992 Olympic Games - Tampa - Airport co-coordinator for the USOC 1992 to 1994 - Executive Director - South Florida Sports Festival 1994 to 1996 - Atlanta Paralympics - Senior Venue Planning Manager 1996 to 1998 - Goodwill Games, New York - Senior Venue Planning Manager URGENT! Beer, wine and pop will also be provided.
