Rob McKenna
Washington Attorney General

x1011McKenna1Rob McKenna is Washington’s 17th Attorney General. As the state's chief legal officer, he directs 460 attorneys and over 600 other employees providing legal services to state agencies, boards and commissions.

General McKenna is committed to providing statewide leadership in the battle against methamphetamine production, identity theft, child predators, domestic violence and counterterrorism activities.

His priorities as Attorney General include:

• Strengthening our state's public disclosure laws and increasing government compliance;

• Creating a new cyber fraud unit to combat identity theft, internet fraud and associated problems, such as phishing emails and spyware; and

• Reducing the number of lawsuits against state taxpayers by pursuing aggressive risk management strategies with his agency clients.

General McKenna has cut over $3 million in office overhead to free up more funding for his consumer protection and law enforcement priorities.

McKenna received his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988, where he was a member of the Law Review. He earned a B.A. in Economics and a B.A. in International Studies, both with honors, from the University of Washington.  McKenna was student body president at the U.W. and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He has been an attorney for 17 years since beginning his career in 1988 at the Bellevue office of Perkins Coie, one of the nation's top 50 law firms.

In 1995, McKenna was elected to the Metropolitan King County Council. He was re-elected twice without opposition and was twice rated "Outstanding" by the Municipal League.

A committed community leader, McKenna has raised hundreds of thousands for the Eastside Domestic Violence Program and the Bellevue Schools Foundation. An Eagle Scout himself, McKenna continues to serve as a board member with the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Bellevue Community College Foundation.

McKenna, his wife Marilyn and their four children reside in Bellevue.

Filling Stefi's "Dance Card"
Katherine Michaud

Our exchange student Stefi is happy and excited to be in Bellevue, but her dance card has been empty most of the weekends since she arrived. Stefi is happy and grateful to do anything. Kim Wold took her to a baseball game and she had a great time. The Raskins, her host family, took her with their girls to a pumpkin patch and she really enjoyed it.

  • How about re-exploring your city with some new eyes?
  • A walk in the Bellevue Botanical Garden
  • Pancakes at Chace’s, a teen favorite place
  • Canoe or bike the Mercer Slough
  • Visit the barn at Kelsey Creek
  • Visit the new Seattle library
  • Take the Underground Tour (yes, you will still laugh)
  • Husky game
  • Japanese Botanical Garden (tea service October 15)
  • Seattle Art Museum
  • The Symphony, Bellevue or Seattle - both would be great
  • Enjoy a show at the Village Theater, or have her join you and your children/grandchildren at the Children’s Theater.

If you need some more ideas, don’t hesitate to contact me.

By the way, Stefi likes all types of foods. She is a delight to cook for — she really loves salmon (hint to Glen)

Steff is staying with the Raskins and can be reached at 425-451-3773. Her email address is stefania_2079@hotmail.com

Let Them Eat Cookies ... and Rolls!

x1004CookiesRolls1Comments have been made recently about the lack of rolls served at the weekly luncheon meetings. When contacted about this, Stacy Harris of the Harobor Club said, "The amount of waste generated when we [automatically] put a basket of rolls on every table for a group of this size is enormous. Since so many people these days are on low-carb diets, we have found that this is an area where we can work to keep meal costs down for your group. As we strive to give Rotary the very best value, not only today, but in the long term, we do have to watch and pay attention to the areas where waste occurs."

According to Stacy, rolls are always available and members simply need to ask for them if theyare not on the table, or ask for more if they have all been consumed.

Comments were also made regarding the number of cookies provided at the luncheon meetings, not enough to go around. Responding to this subject, Stacy Harris said, "Cookies are also an area where we have seen waste in the past, and while each cookie may not represent a large amount of cost, collectively this is an area where we can work to keep Rotary's meal cost low."

Stacy also said, "Not only do we practice these methods to keep the meal cost low, we also attempt to avoid being wasteful. Per the health department, once something is placed on the guest table or buffet, we may not re-serve or re-use the item."

That's good practice to which I'm sure no Rotarian has any objection, but as a final comment, Stacy said, "Of course, with both the rolls and cookies, we are happy to provide more to the tables upon request."

So, the bottom line is members simply need to speak up and ask for cookies and rolls, or more cookies and rolls. Don't be shy!
