WEEKLY BULLETIN FEATURED SPEAKER FOR OCTOBER 5, 2004
Christine Gregoire
Gregoire became Washington's 16th state attorney general in 1992, the first woman elected to the position in state history. During her first term, she worked tirelessly on children's issues and led a statewide program that resulted in a comprehensive reform of the state's juvenile system. Gregoire also worked to pass a tough new ethics law for state government and to find alternatives to litigation in resolving legal disputes. Chris Gregoire being sworn in as Attorney General Gregoire has been a leader in the effort to protect privacy and combat identity theft, one of the fastest growing consumer scams in the country. In 2001, she led a legislative effort to strengthen victim's rights in dealing with the effects of identity theft. The new law, which went into effect later that year, helps law enforcement prosecute identity thieves, and makes it easier for victims to restore their good names. Congress is now considering a similar bill. Chris Gregoire speaking at a recent event In response to dramatic increases in prescription drug prices - especially for the state's senior citizens - Gregoire has investigated and sued several drug companies for violating antitrust laws by illegally manipulating the price and availability of their products. Prior to being elected attorney general, Gregoire served as director of the Washington Department of Ecology from 1988 to 1992. During her tenure she negotiated the Tri-Party Agreement (TPA) with the federal government for the safe cleanup and permanent storage of radioactive wastes at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Eastern Washington. The U.S. Department of Energy's cleanup of the former nuclear weapons site is generally regarded as the largest environmental cleanup project in the world. Raised in Auburn, Washington, Gregoire graduated from the University of Washington in 1969 with a teaching certificate and Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and sociology. In 1977, she received a Juris Doctorate degree and, in 1995, an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Gonzaga University. Gregoire and her husband Michael reside in Olympia. When not in college or law school, their two daughters join them there. Members of the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Bellevue are invited to celebrate Oktoberfest with traditional German foods and live music! Beer, wine and pop will also be provided. Tuesday, October 26th Party will be held at the home of BBRC member Sadru Kabani (same host as last year) at 84 Cascade Key, Newport Shores, Bellevue Eastside Adult Day Services
Corporate Match Programs We are trying to build a list of all the companies within the Bellevue Rotary Club that have corporate match programs. Corporate match programs are where a company will match a certain percentage of charitable contributions by its employees. If your company has such a program, please email David Laub, Foundation Committee Chairperson. Youth Exchange Program Many thanks to Kim and Janice Wold for the delightful BBQ party they hosted for all the District's exchange students and their host families. The eleven District 5030 students were avidly exchanging calling cards, making friends and planning future get togethers. The host families were in the other room hashing out solutions to the panic buttons on present and imagined difficulties. Thank you, Kim and Janice. Please remember to include Sol in your family outings and sports and cultural events, and schedule these through Pete Swindley for October and Ken Graham for November. They will coordinate with Katherine Michaud, her host family, and Sol. Also please put the word out to your children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and all of their friends that we are looking for candidates to go outbound to other countries. Any country with a Rotary Club is fair game to apply for; however, applicants may be directed to their second or third choice. France and Italy are usually over-applied for. These exchanges are summer or year long ones and are open only to students who are sophomores or juniors in high school, 16-18 years of age. The applicant's family is usually expected to host the student's foreign "brother" or "sister" for the same amount of time, approximately one and a half to three months. In my absence for approximately six weeks, Katherine Michaud, Youth Exchange Vice Chair, will disburse applications and handle interviews of applicants (Ph Home-425 688-7790 or Cell-206 909-7790). Let's have an avalanche of applicants! Lisa Marie Curda of the famed Glen Curda family has already applied. So the race is on! Scheduling Sol Our exchange student Sol is living with Katherine Michaud and her family until December 1st, when she will move to Kim Wold's home.
