Exchange Students Visit the BRC
Stu Vander Hoek

x0816ExchStudents1Four students participated in the 2005 Rotary Short Term Summer Exchange. Andrew Henningsen and LiseMarie Curda were sponsored by the BRC. Both spent 3-4 weeks in Italy and Germany, respectively.

The summer exchange is a one-to-one exchange. Our students' families agree to host an inbound student from another country for 3-4 weeks. Likewise, the foreign students' families agree to host our outbound students. This program is designed to create ambassadors for all countries in an effort to develop goodwill and better understandings between those countries. These young people really do a great job in that regard.

Participating countries can include Holland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, Austria, France, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden. The year-long exchange has other country selections as well. If you know a student who might be interested in a particular country, let us know. We'll see what we can do.

Rotarian children and grandchildren can participate in this program. Applications are available on the Rotary.org website, and are accepted by clubs in the fall. Currently, our district sends out about 10 students per year. We would like to send out 30. So if you have an interest, contact Katherine Michaud, Gail Ryder, or Stu Vander Hoek for more information.

Community Grant at Work
Phil Bevan

Following is a note from Doreen Marchione, Exexuctive Director of the Adelle Maxwell Child Development Center, an organization supported by the BRC with a Community Grant:

Dear Rotarians:

I'm pleased to inform you that we have accomplished the renovations at the Adelle Maxwell Child Development Center in Bellevue which the Bellevue Rotary Community Grants supported with a grant of $1,700.

These funds were used toward the renovation of one toddler classroom and two pre-school classroom bathroom floors at the center. The center serves children ages four weeks to eight years of age from homeless and low-income families in east King county.

As we noted in our application, this center serves approximately 100 children each year and operates five days a week, 12 moths a year from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

If you or others with the Bellevue Rotary would like to tour the center, we would be delighted to make those arrangements. If you have any questions about this project, which is now completed, or would like to tour, please contact our grants manager, Diane Ellis, at 4250883-4504 or dianee@hope-link.org. Thank you again for your partnership on this project.

Sincerely,

Doreen Marchione

Executive Director

Congressman Reichert Speaks to
Bellevue Rotary
Jim Montgomery

x0816ReichertMontgomery1Dave Reichert, our freshman representative from the 8th Congressional District spoke to the Bellevue Rotary Club membership recently, and he offered insight into his initial impressions of Washington, D.C., since he took office last January. He opened with an enthusiastic monologue about the importance of homeland security and the roll everyone has in protecting our country. He mentioned he is the only former sheriff on the Republican side of the House, although he noted there are several Democrats who previously served in law enforcement roles. Congressman Reichert felt he was well prepared, following his over-30-years in law enforcement, to represent his district.

Dave concluded with a spirited 10 minutes of questions and answers as the membership peppered him with a wide variety of interests and concerns.

Bellevue Rotary Presents Vocational Award
to Lt. Lisa Piculell
Jim Montgomery

x0816Piculell1Sarah Langdon, representing the Vocational Committee, presented this year’s award in recognition of Lt. Lisa Piculell’s service to her community and country. Bellevue Police Chief and Club member Jim Montgomery formally presented Lisa to the Club, with a $1000 donation being made to Lisa’s favorite charity.

In response, Lisa reminded the Club that she was also the recipient of a $1000 Club scholarship 20 years ago, which enabled her to begin Bellevue Community College. She announced she would be setting up a scholarship program at Sammamish High School as a result of the Club’s charitable gift. Lisa later graduated from college, joined the Bellevue Police Department, and has served in a wide variety of assignments, including motorcycles, School Resource Officer, and Hostage/Rescue Team, and she was most recently promoted to patrol lieutenant. In addition, Lisa is a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard and was discharged from active duty following a call-up two years ago.

Rob Rose Published in Nepal
Rob Rose

I was elated to receive this email below from and the link to the article that I wrote. Having it printed in a Nepali publication was a dream of mine that has come true! I feel very lucky to have family, friends and supporters like you all who have helped make it all happen.

From: Tilak
Date: August 18, 2005 6:38:06 AM PDT
To: Rob Rose

Subject: Greetings from Nepal!

Dear Rose,

x0816KantipurLogo1My name is Tilak P Pokharel, a senior reporter with The Kathmandu Post. Thanks for writing such a wonderful and inspiring article on disabled children of Nepal. I got the article from Dipendra, and it was published on the August 9 issue of the Kathmandu Post. The link to your article is:

http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?&nid=48227

Following its publication, we have received overwhelming response from readers and researchers. Margaret Jeffery, a volunteer from the UK and currently with the Nepal Disabled Human Rights Centre, asked if they could translate it into Nepali so as to publish it in Nepali. Since we reserve the copyright, we have already given them the consent.

Likewise, a friend of one of my colleagues is currently working on Masters thesis on disabled children. Hence, the person may contact you.

By the way, may I know where you stay in the United States. I am coming to NY and will be there from Sept 10 to Dec 10. During this period, I will be reporting the United Nations General Assembly from the UN Headquarters.

Do keep in touch.
Best regards, Tilak
