John Powers
President & Chief Executive Officer
enterpriseSeattle
"Partnering for Regional Prosperity"

x0628JohnPowers1John Powers became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Economic Development Council of Seattle & King County in April of '04. Under Powers' leadership, the thirty three year old public-private economic development partnership has been refocused, recapitalized, revitalized and renamed - enterpriseSeattle. enterpriseSeattle is now playing a leading role in the construction and execution of a unified economic strategy for job creation in the Central Puget Sound Region - the Prosperity Partnership.

Powers is a strong advocate for achieving global economic competitiveness through regional collaboration and a sustained and unparallel commitment to education and innovation. He has a record of revitalizing organizations by rebuilding relationships.

As Spokane's first full-time "strong mayor", Powers established the first City Office of Economic Development, served on The Governor's Competitiveness Council, and Co-Chaired The United States Conference of Mayors' Task Force on Energy Reorganization and Reform.

x0628EntSeaLogo1Prior to serving in public office, Powers practiced law with the firm of Paine-Hamblen from 1983 to 2000. He was the lead partner in the firm's financial reorganization practice representing businesses in a variety of industry sectors. During this time he served as the President of The Federal Bar of Eastern WA and on The Board of Governors for the WA State Bar Association.

Upon graduating from Notre Dame in 1974, Powers began his entrepreneurial career by forming an independent insurance and real estate brokerage agency in Monroe Wisconsin where he also served as the President of The Green County Board of Realtors.

John and his wife Bonnie, a teacher at McClure Middle School, are parents of four children and recently welcomed their first grandchild.

2005 Strawberry Festival &
CLASSIC AUTO SHOW
June 25 & 26
by Ross McIvor

x0621StrawberryAutoShow1Plan to attend Eastside Heritage Center’s 1st Annual Classic Auto Show on Sunday, June 26. THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED!

This brand new event is combined with the Annual Eastside Heritage Center Bellevue Strawberry Festival. For information on the Classic Auto Show and to download the registration form, click here.

Get your car out of your garage and come down for a fun day. This is a community event and not a “Concours d’Elegance,” so take the opportunity to show your “baby” to the public and the judges, if you choose.

Stu Vanderhoek and I are on the Board of the Eastside Heritage Center. The Strawberry Festival will be both days, June 25-26, and the Auto Show will take place from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 26th.  Main Street in Old Bellevue will be closed for that purpose.

The Strawberry festival will be taking place on many of the streets, alleys and parking lots north of Main Street, so come have fun, even if you don't participate in the "1st Annual Classic Auto Show."

I have registered my '68 Mustang, so I will be there during the show as a participant and as an Eastside Heritage Center Board Member Volunteer.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

nformation on this fun and worthwhile event!

x0614Normandy1Take a virtual trip to France with our Group Study Exchange Team (Lisa Balleaux, Kimberly Stewart, Richard MacLean, Marty Wine, Sally Gee). The team leaves on Wednesday, June 1, for one month in the Normandy region of France. They have promised to send reports, including pictures, every few days so that we can keep up with their progress. Check back regularly at www.rotary5030.org/gse, and put this address in your favorites list.

Next year we'll be sending a team to Bavaria. Look for Rotarians who might be our team leader and non-Rotarians who might be team members to Germany and Austria.
