WEEKLY BULLETIN FEATURED MAY 24, 2005
Rob Rose
Known on the Eastside as "The Signature of Fine Portraiture" in Bellevue since 1949, the studio specializes in Fine Portraiture of families, children, executives and even pets! A second generation photographer, Rob followed in his father Kens footsteps as photographer and owner of Brants. Robs mother Arlene is still active in the business and continues to work on a part-time basis. Back in 1974 at the age of 16, Rob was a Rotary Club exchange student and spent his junior year of high school in Calcutta, India. This experience helped shape his life. He still keeps in close contact with two of his host families. In 1997, Rob read an article about the impoverished lives of children living in Nepal. He made a phone call to volunteer his photographic expertise to help out a nonprofit organization based in California that was providing assistance to many children in Nepal. That one call started a cascade of events that has led to a volunteer odyssey spanning eight years and twelve projects- two in India and ten in Nepal, providing assistance to orphans, disabled children, hearing impaired kids, abused women and victims of terminal cancer. Most of the projects have been accomplished with grant assistance from Bellevue Rotary Club and its parent organization, Rotary International. They have had a wonderfully positive impact on the lives of disadvantaged and disabled children. Rob and his wife Gina work together closely on project coordination and are close to filing the paperwork to form their own 501(c)3 non-profit organization to benefit the disabled and disadvantaged in Nepal. They have three sons aged 19, 18 and 15. With charter of Tajikistan club, Rotary International News Tajikistan became the 167th Rotary country when the Rotary Club of Dushanbe received its charter on 5 April. The event was the culmination of an eight-year quest by some of the club's 36 charter members to bring Rotary to the Central Asian country. Ella Ryazanova, chair of the club's programs committee, was among the prospective members. In the late 1990s, she was head of a nongovernmental initiative aimed at identifying opportunities for individuals who wished to participate in the business and nonprofit sectors in transitional economies and postconflict countries. Ryazanova's team discovered Rotary while looking for examples of organizations that promote socially responsible conduct among business leaders and professionals. Inspired by Rotary's ideals, members of the group established what they called a "Friends of Rotary" club in Dushanbe. With the guidance of Renny Smith, wife of Rotarian Grant Smith, the U.S. ambassador to Tajikistan at the time, the "friends" started propagating Rotary values. They initiated projects, including a joint effort with the Rotary Club of Boulder, Colorado, USA, to alleviate malnutrition among elderly pensioners in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. In 1998, Ryazanova represented the group at a Rotary-sponsored peace forum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was interviewed by an editor from The Rotarian. "[The] extension of Rotary to Tajikistan was announced [in St. Petersburg]," explains Ryazanova. "[But the] political situation in Tajikistan was not quite stable, and it prevented us from going ahead with chartering a Rotary club." In 2002, Nancy Pasternak, of the Rotary Club of Bellevue, Washington, USA, arrived in Dushanbe as a volunteer with Doctors Without Borders. She became a liaison between the Friends of Rotary club and RI World Headquarters. Two years later, RI gave the green light to form a provisional Rotary club in Dushanbe. "This was a chance of a lifetime to make a fine difference through Rotary and to carry on my father's legacy as a past district governor and very active Rotarian," says Pasternak. "My husband and I agreed I could afford to spend a month in Tajikistan to work on forming the club." Working with RI staff and Rotarians such as Salem Mashhour, chair of RI's Extension of Rotary to Muslim Countries Subcommittee, and Erhan Çiftcioglu, governor of RI District 2430, Pasternak helped turn the dream of a Rotary club in Tajikistan into reality. "Marilynne Davis, of the Rotary Club of Champaign, Illinois, and director of the Urban Institute in Tajikistan for the next year or so, is working with the club officers on-site, along with me by e-mail, to orient them and advise the club in its activities," says Pasternak. Tajikistan joins District 2430, which includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. For more details, e-mail Suleiman Chulibaev, president of the Rotary Club of Dushanbe.
The golf event is a go as we have 24 members who expressed interest in playing. Our first starting time is at 1:30 on June 6th at Trilogy, and the cost is $85 for balls, cart, food and golf. We will be playing a "Shamble" format just like last fall. Larry Abner and I will be making up the pairing in about 2 weeks, based on handicaps and/or average scores. However, in order to make the teams as fair as possible, I need you to send me your index and/or handicap or average scores ASAP. If you are one of the 24 people who have expressed an interest in playing and have decided NOT to play, please let me know ASAP, as I will be having Lori bill you the $85.00 fee. If you are wanting to play please let me know ASAP, as we only have 28 spots and they will be filled on a first come first serve. Contact Brad Hunt about this event!
Come to Camp Goodtimes this year on Wednesday, June 22. Plan to spend the day on Vashon Island. Bellevue Rotary members will once again put on a rip roaring, way cool, action packed carnival garnished at the end with lots of whipped cream. Sign up anytime with Charlotte Ellis, or check out the table flyers in late May/early June. Spouses and teens can help too. Help us out! |
