Chris Velicer, Epidemiologist
Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health
University of Washington

"Antibiotics: Friend or Foe?"

Velicer2aAntibiotics are powerful drugs that we rely on to fight infections. Often, however, we do not understand the dire consequences of misuse or the potential undesirable health effects that antibiotic use might elicit. In this talk, Dr. Velicer will briefly cover the conditions for which antibiotics are effective and the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance. She will then describe her research of the association between antibiotic use and breast cancer, and she will identify what this research means for us as health care consumers and try to answer the question: are antibiotics our friend or foe?

Dr. Christine Velicer is an Epidemiologist in University of Washington’s Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health. Dr. Velicer’s research focuses on identifying associations between medicines, medical conditions, and the development of cancer. She is the lead investigator of a study of antibiotic use and breast cancer risk published last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In addition to her work on antibiotics, Dr. Velicer is involved in a series of studies of the association between prostate cancer and medical factors such as: diabetes, asthma, allergies, cardiovascular disease, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use. Dr. Velicer’s work involves routine collaboration with epidemiologists from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Group Health Cooperative’s Center for Health Studies, and the University of Washington.

Prior to completing her doctorate at the University of Washington, Dr. Velicer worked for 10 years at Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation as a human health and environmental regulatory policy consultant and national trainer for the Environmental Protection Agency, various state and local governments, and the private sector.

Dr. Velicer received her M.S. from Cornell University in Natural Resources Policy and Management and her B.A. in Biology from LaSalle University.

Dr. Velicer and her husband reside on the Eastside and spend much of their energy raising their 3-year-old daughter and twin ten-month-old daughters.

Rotary's Big Boots
By TINA ROSENBERG

Published: May 11, 2005

Next month Rotary International turns 100. Rotary clubs, a staple of small-town life, are celebrating the construction of innumerable parks, the holding of myriad blood drives, the awarding of countless college scholarships - and the imminent global eradication of polio.

Twenty years ago, there were a thousand new cases of polio every day. Now polio strikes only about a thousand children a year. By next year, that number should be zero. People who think of Rotary as a congregation of service-minded dentists and funeral directors may not have noticed, but the dentists and funeral directors have created the largest, most successful private health initiative ever.
