WEEKLY BULLETIN FEATURED MAY 10, 2005
Dr. Stephen M. Jordan
Dr. Jordan helped refocus the universitys mission on career preparation with a strong underpinning in the liberal arts, strengthened the residential focus of the main campus in Cheney and guided the institution to respond more quickly to regional business and industry needs for graduates in technology and health sciences disciplines. Under his leadership, Eastern has developed three special-focus Centers of Excellence in the liberal arts areas Creative Writing, Music and Honors. In addition, Dr. Jordans vision for an applied science and research complex on campus is taking shape with the new State Government Digital Archives Building and soon-to-open Washington State Patrol Forensic Building and School of Computing and Engineering Sciences. The son of a career military officer, Dr. Jordan was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in many locations before attending high school in Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army, 1967-69. He has a B.A. in political science from the University of Northern Colorado, an M.A. in public administration (with a financial administration emphasis) from the University of Colorado at Denver and a Ph.D. in public administration (policy analysis major/financial administration minor) from the University of Colorado. He serves on several local boards of directors, is Governor Lockes appointee to the Washington Technology Council Board and is a member of the NCAA Division I-AA/I-AAA Presidential Advisory Group. He and his wife Ruthie are active in the community and are involved with Pathways to Progress, a Cheney community development project. Most recently, Dr. Jordan was named in a new book about forward-thinking college leaders as an example of a bold, change-oriented president who has transformed his campus. The Entrepreneurial College President describes Dr. Jordan and 16 other presidents as individuals who Éappreciate, but are not anchored by, the past and who readily question the status quo, generate innovative ideas, and find ways to prevent organizational structure from discouraging change. Among the other presidents named were Steven B. Sample, University of Southern California president; Kenneth A. Shaw, Syracuse University president; and Steven Joel Trachtenberg, president of George Washington University. Dr. Jordan came to Eastern in July 1998 from his position as executive director for the Kansas Board of Regents and the State Higher Education Officer for the State of Kansas. Ruthie Jordan was a financial advisor with American Express in Topeka, Kansas. The Jordans have been married 19 years and have three grown children and four grandchildren.
