Ski Trip Cancelled!
Scott East

Thanks to all who were committed to the trip this year, but alas, we had to cancel the March 9 ski trip.

Our lodge host just returned from midwinter break and advised Lisa Carroll that even if we got the dump of snow I allowed might happen in the coming week, Crystal (and/or the lodge) would not open for midweek skiing.

So, please mark you calendars for the first Tuesday/Wednesday of March 2006, and do the periodic dance to snow gods earlier next year.

Our own Rotary administrator, Laurie Larson, will treat the host couple to a culinary tour of Seattle. She will take them to her favorite, secret “foodie” places, including her favorite Pike Street /Bellevue Farmer’s Market vendors, to purchase the “secret” ingredients for the evening.

Rob Takes Nepal to Lynden

x0308RoseGardiner1Rob Rose was the featured speaker, with his presentation on Nepal, at the Mt. Baker Rotary Club in Lynden, Washington, this last Tuesday. The presentation details Rob's trip to Nepal last February and the Rotary Foundation's positive impact on our world.

Rob had met the president of the club, Sam Gardiner, at a photography seminar last fall (Sam is a portrait photographer as well), and Sam introduced Rob to a club member named Jim Sinclair, who helped build an orthopedic hospital in Nepal with Rotary funds. Jim also worked with the same Rotary Cub in Nepal, Patan Rotary Club, that Rob has worked with so many times.

Jim has been very ill, but managed to arrive at the meeting just in time to view Rob's DVD presentation. Jim's wife Anne also attended.

Rotary friends come together through service to our community and our world!

On another note, from David Laub, Foundation Chairman:

Robert Rose’s article “Foundation Spells Opportunity for Children in Nepal” was the lead article in March 2005 monthly newsletter of The Rotary Foundation. Click here to read the article (PDF format).

Bellevue Rotary’s impact on the Foundation and the world is tremendous when we all work together.  Congratulations to Rob Rose on his recognition for helping improve the lives of children in Nepal.

NEWS RELEASE

2006-07 Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship Applications Now Available
Sandra J. Olson-Meyer, Ambassadorial Scholarship Chair

The scholarships, which are designed to further international understanding and goodwill, provide for study aboard in more than 10 countries where Rotary clubs are located. Some 1,300 scholarships of various types will be available from clubs worldwide.

During their studies aboard, Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars act as “ambassadors of goodwill.” Through appearances before Rotary clubs and districts, schools, civic organizations and other forums, the scholars represent their homelands and work to further international understanding.

Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are for one academic year aboard and provide funding for round-trip transportation, tuition and fees, room, board, some educational supplies, and language training (if necessary) up to a maximum award of $25,000.

Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are flat grants of $12,000 per year for two years toward the cost of a degree program in another country. Also available are Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships which provide funding for six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country, including transportation, tuition, and home stay expenses, up to a maximum of $19,000.

For more information and an application please contact Sandra Olson-Meyer (Ph 425-285-2330 or 1930 116th Ave NE, Ste 201, Bellevue, WA 98004). Interested students may also want to consult the Rotary website, where the application may be downloaded.

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world’s largest privately sponsored international scholarship program. Focused on humanitarian service, personal diplomacy, and academic excellence, the program has sponsored more than 30,000 Rotary Scholars aboard since it began in 1947.

CampGoodtimes2

Come to Camp Goodtimes this year on Wednesday, June 22. Plan to spend the day on Vashon Island. Bellevue Rotary members will once again put on a rip roaring, way cool, action packed carnival garnished at the end with lots of whipped cream. Sign up anytime with Charlotte Ellis, or check out the table flyers in late May/early June. Spouses and teens can help too.

CampGoodtimes1aIn fact, we are looking for someone who likes to fish. At Camp Goodtimes the kids need some help getting their lines untangled, baited and ready for the fish to bite. We take each group of ten kids, ages 7-17, to the old dock on the east side of Vashon Island. Every camper should get at least one fishing trip during the week of camp, June 19-25, and we need someone to help make this activity a highlight of the week. Two regular counselors accompany each group but sometimes no one has ever fished before.

Help us out! Come to camp for half days on June 20, 21 and 24!
