Dr. Ken Stuart, PH.D.
Seattle Biomedical Research
Dean Allen, SBRI board member &
President of McKinstry Co.

"Puget Sound: An Epicenter for
Global Health Research"

KenStuart1Ken Stuart, Ph.D., is President and Director of Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, the largest non-profit organization in the U.S. focused solely on infectious disease research.

His research encompasses genomics, gene expression processes, and gene function in parasites that kill about a million people each year. Dr. Stuart discovered RNA editing, which provides the basis for new drug treatments for several deadly diseases. He is a leading expert in trypanosomal and leishmanial pathogens and led interactive research projects with several organizations around the world to sequence and analyze the genomes of Trypanosoma brucei, which causes African sleeping sickness, Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease (a leading form of heart and intestinal disease), and Leishmania major, one of the parasites that cause a variety of mild to lethal diseases.

A native of Boston, Dr. Stuart received his undergraduate degree in biology from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in biology from Wesleyan University. He earned his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Iowa. He engaged in postdoctoral training in biochemistry at the National Institutes for Medical Research in London England and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Dr. Stuart founded SBRI in 1976. Since 1985, he has served as a professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Washington, as well as department chair from 1996-2004. He has provided extensive research advisory service to many organizations including the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, the National Science Foundation, the Human Frontiers of Science Program, the Wellcome Trust, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Currently, Dr. Stuart serves on the external advisory board for the University of Washington’s Keck Center for Microbial Pathogens and on the executive committee for the Gates Foundation’s Puget Sound Partners for Global Health.

Dr. Stuart was a Burroughs Wellcome Scholar in Molecular Parasitology from 1988-1993, received the Denis Thienpont Prize in Molecular Parasitology in 1997, and the Stoll-Stunkard Award from the American Society of Parasitologists in 2002. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers on his research on parasites.

CampGoodtimes2

Come to Camp Goodtimes this year on Wednesday, June 22. Plan to spend the day on Vashon Island. Bellevue Rotary members will once again put on a rip roaring, way cool, action packed carnival garnished at the end with lots of whipped cream. Sign up anytime with Charlotte Ellis, or check out the table flyers in late May/early June. Spouses and teens can help too.

CampGoodtimes1aIn fact, we are looking for someone who likes to fish. At Camp Goodtimes the kids need some help getting their lines untangled, baited and ready for the fish to bite. We take each group of ten kids, ages 7-17, to the old dock on the east side of Vashon Island. Every camper should get at least one fishing trip during the week of camp, June 19-25, and we need someone to help make this activity a highlight of the week. Two regular counselors accompany each group but sometimes no one has ever fished before.

Help us out! Come to camp for half days on June 20, 21 and 24!

Auction Invoices Have Been Mailed!

All Rotarians are billed for two auction tickets, regardless of whether you are attending the event, but we hope you will attend the auction!

If you are currently on leave of absence, we still ask that you support our annual major fundraiser.  We hope you will attend the auction, but if you are unable, we will need your payment that much more to raise funds!

We appreciate your prompt payment in a separate check made payable to the "Bellevue Rotary Foundation," which is a separate charitable organization. You may consider the fair market value of each ticket to be $40 and deduct the rest as a donation.

If payment is not received by March 28th, the credit card you use for “Quick Pay” will be charged the night of the auction.
