Doug Southerland
Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands

DougSoutherland1Doug Sutherland is the 14th Commissioner of Public Lands since statehood in 1889. He began his four-year term in January 2001. As Commissioner of Public Lands, Doug manages the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and chairs the Board of Natural Resources, which sets policy for the management of the state's lands. This includes more than 2.8 million acres of publicly owned forests, agricultural and grazing lands, and commercial properties. State lands are managed to raise money for construction of public schools, colleges, universities, and other government buildings, as well as for county and state services. The Department of Natural Resources also manages approximately 2.6 million acres of aquatic lands, which include shorelines, tidelands, lands under Puget Sound and the coast, navigable lakes and rivers.

In addition, Doug oversees the largest fire department in the state, protecting 12 million acres of private and state-owned land from wildfires. He also chairs the state Forest Practices Board, which sets regulations concerning private timber harvests, forest road building, and other forest operations. DNR monitors cleanup efforts for mining operations, and assists communities by providing scientific information about earthquakes, landslides, and ecologically sensitive areas for plants. The Department also provides grants that are used to increase public access to shorelines. Commissioner Sutherland administers a $400 million, two-year budget.

Doug was born in Helena, Montana and lived briefly in Vancouver, Washington, while his father served in the U.S. Navy. He then moved to Spokane. Doug attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg, graduating with a B.A. in History. In October 2001, CWU honored Doug with the “Distinguished Alumni Award for College of Arts and Humanities.”

Doug and his wife Grace live in Lacey and have six grown children and five grandchildren.
