DisasterEffort1Sri Lanka Disaster Relief
By President Katherine Thompson

I have been in touch with Rotarian friends in Sri Lanka. As you might imagine, the horrific scenes of death and devastation that we watch on CNN are overwhelming to those on the ground in Sri Lanka. For anyone interested in offering assistance, my friend provided me with this link: www.helpsl.org

There are links to various aid organizations that are accepting donations on this site.

I am also providing information on Northwest Medical Teams (NWMTI), a local agency providing aid to the people of South Asia devastated by the Tsunami. Teams of medical volunteers will each carry a 55 lbs duffle bag with medical supplies worth $7,000 which will aid 10,000 people in need. NWMTI volunteers will be airlifted by helicopters in order to access the areas in need.

The most rampant epidemics in this type of disaster situation are: malaria, acute respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, measles and malnutrition.  The MAIN issue facing aid workers is water contamination, which translates into another huge issue: cholera.  NWMTI is sending water purification equipment and supplies with its volunteers.

Funds are desperately needed to help send volunteers and medical supplies and to support the efforts of local in-country partners. To donate to the Northwest Medical Teams Disaster Relief Fund, call 1-800-959-4325; mail gifts to Northwest Medical Teams, 1920-116th Avenue NE, Suite 201, Bellevue, WA 98004; or give online at their secure web site: www.nwmedicalteams.org.

This is truly one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit any place in the world. It has left so many people homeless, but worst of all is the tremendous loss of life. Our donations will help those who have lost loved ones and been harmed by this event.

Bellevue Rotary Foundation is accepting donations for the relief efforts in South Asia.  Member contributions, along with $1000 from Bellevue Rotary Foundation, will be sent directly to Rotarian Disaster Relief Coordinators in Sri Lanka and India.

Donations can be mailed to PO Box 523, Bellevue, WA  98009 or charged to your credit card by contacting club administrator, Laurie Larson (425-451-3819).

Make checks payable to:  "Bellevue Rotary Foundation" with a memo line note:  South Asia Disaster Relief Fund

Emails From Rotarians in Sri Lanka

Dearest Friends,

Thanks for the messages and help you all have given to get us back on our feet again.

Things have been moving very rapidly and help is getting to the affected areas. The absolute despair of the survivors is really getting us all down because there is so little we can say to console them. Only God can give them the strength and support. We keep praying to God that he can give the affected some quick relief mentally and physically. How unpredictable life can be - it was very sad to see the orphaned children, especially the ones that are old enough to understand. Parents are running around to the refugee shelters hoping that their child would be amongst those rescued. The problems are many and we are feeling very sad and depressed but through that comes the compassion to help our fellow beings.

Thanks again for all the thoughts and prayers. We can all do with support and comforting.

* * *

Thank you very much for your mail with kind words and offers of help. It is very much appreciated at such a time of disaster. Your kind words; support and encouragement, helps us work harder and do more to the less fortunate. Thank you.

* * *

Words of encouragement keep flowing in via e-mail and phone along with offers of funds, required supplies, and advice from all corners of the world. Thank you to all for keeping us energized with your generosity.

We mobilized immediately after the Tsunami. With one and a half days of donations, RCCR joined Dr Lakshman Weerasena and 15 other doctors and took dry rations and medicines along interior roads to Matara, Dickwella and Tangalle on 27 December. The group included 4 surgeons and 11 GPs. They held 7 mini health camps covering over 3,000 people. They dressed wounds and treated for pain, fever, diarrhoea, and lung infections among others.

Rotarian Prabhu says there were so many bodies lying and the Matara hospital smelt really bad. They had heard so many heart rendering stories. He could not believe people begging for medicine. He said it looked like the just after the Hiroshima bombing. He saw a crocodile that had such a feast he was unable to move.

We are ever so thankful for Dr Lakshman Weerasena and his team who always joins up with RCCR on health camps on many parts of the country.

We take comfort in the feeling that the rest of the world is much closer to us than it physically is. At this very moment, there is a group from Regency heading to Tangalle a coastal town in the south with Shelter Boxes that have been donated to the Rotary Club of Colombo from a Rotary Club in USA. More updates once the team returns.
